VDR, MythTV, or some other PVR backend to view Live TV from XBMC?

Question
I have been a MythTV user for some time now, even wrote a few patches, but recently trying some alternatives.

My main reason to choose MythTV over VDR was because of its extra features to manage my media. Now I'm using XBMC this isn't needed anymore, but that's no reason to stop using the mythtv backend (its good software and very stable).

My main reason to stop using myth-backend (this is the part that handles the livetv and recordings features etc) is because of it's extremly long time to swith between channels (3-5 seconds and sometimes more) and its constant writing to the harddisk when waching live tv (Mythtv always records what you are whatching). This makes my system use more power and can't be good for the harddisk in the long run.

I've been looking at (most) alternatives and now trying out VDR for watching livetv and schedule recordings/timeshifting. It's in use for several weeks now, rocksolide (like mythtv), fast channels switching and uses less system resources.

At the moment it seems the perfect choice but I'm still wondering what you guys are using for live tv and recordings.

one other thing: any one using the XBMC-vdr branch? (http://www.xbmc.org/trac/ticket/5595). Seems that VDR is now supported... anyone experience with this? Looks to me an even beter solution than switching between VDR and XBMC.

See this post about status of the PVR-branch. VDR support is still very experimental using alwin's patch mentioned in your post.

Thanks Freezy! (already used that one a while ago). good tutorial but a little outdated and has a few errors. I've taken the time to fix these in my local copy, but others their feedback are also not honored so not bothering to post these.

I'm still wondering what others use besides XBMC for live tv and recordings?

Feel free to send me corrections. Quite some time since I last went through the whole process, so if you have enhancements, lemme know.

HTS Tvheadend is an alternative to VDR and MythTV, see:

and:

Unfortunately not documented in the XBMC Online Manual (wiki) yet:

Feel free to update the wiki yourself (just request ninja access first).
