Weird lag playing 1080p movies in xbmc
#1
Hi.

So first i had ubuntu installed, but then i installed xubuntu. I have installed latest ion graphics drivers from nvidia, updated xubuntu and installed xbmc with latest svn.

i have also enabled vertical blank sync, and adjust refresh rate under video options.

The weird thing is that it seems it lags when playing movies. This doesnt happen in winodws with dxva on, or 720p movies.

I pressed O to display some info, and i see its going in 24hz witch is nice, but i dont know what all he aq, vq, dropped etc is. Cpu is about 20%.

I have enabled 512 mb ram to the gpu in bios also.

I just dont get whats wrong. Heres a included clip during playback.

If anyone could give me some pointers on what could be wrong, i would appreciate it very much.

Btw. Im using a external hdd to play movies from. I first thought it couldnt read fast enough, but thats out of the question? The drive i formated ntfs, and i have read/write support. The Ion is connected trough vga atm.

Edit; Just tested copying 50gb inside the usb 2.0 external hdd, it said it took 2 hours, dunno if thats normal or not
Edit; and 13 min to copy a 1080p movie

What exactly do you mean with "it lags"? Is it stuttering/judder? or do you have screen tearing? There's a known issue with nvidia IPGs but i don't know exactly if the ion is suffering from this as well.

Ah, should have explained lag. Sorry about that.

What i mean is that lets say it pans slow or fast left, it cant keep up, it looks like it jumps a frame. Preety hard to explain. I had screen tearing, but when i enabled vertial sync inside xbmc. It stopped.

But looking a the picture,can u see anything wrong with it? i mean vq 30%, if that means video quality.

But ye, i guess by lag i mean, not smooth pans, whetever its fast or slow, it kinda goes slow and uneven, not good in english, but i guess thats what u call stutter, when the frames doesnt go smooth and jumps a bit

You should install a new version of XBMC so you can get the smooth video that was done post 9.04 in order to solve this type of issue.

Yeah smootvideo definitely is a big improvement in video quality. However i do still have some files (Casino Royale for example) that sometimes have your "lag" issues as well - i suppose it's my shitty nvidia 8300 that's to blame.

Maybe you just need to enable it.

Settings->Video->Player->Sync Playback to Display.

Search forums for more details.

No, that is not what he meant. Search forums for safefull.

oh ye, well ive read about that, and i though nvidia ion graphic solution wasnt supported by the safefull patch?

Also look at some threads, and is it enough to edit advancesettings.xml or do i have to that other stuff to

also, it would be nice if anyone could comment the stats from the picture, if its anything wrong with the info there, the dropped numbers etc

No, i guess motd2k was a bit too short Smile There exists a 'patch' (some would say workaround) that seems to fix "lagginess" for some nvidia gpus but that requires you to know how to patch the sources and compile them from svn. Please use the search for "safefull" or "safe fullscreen". there are tons of threads on this topics - even with detailed instructions how to apply them.

Hi!

With newest ppa-Build (9.04.2), newest Nvidia-driver (185.18.14) and starting xbmc --standalone, I have flawless playback of SD-material and HD-h264.
VC1 (Baraka) isn't working at all (which in an earlier version r19955 and Nvidia 180.60 did!).

All without safefull patch.

How do you start XBMC? XBMC-Live? This didn't worked for me at all.
Lagged even with SD.

Regards,
Patrick

--EDIT--

@Threadstarter: Do you have dual-channel-RAM-config?
To first check, if safefull-patch would help. Try to start X and then start XBMC out of an terminal. Switch to fullscreen via "\" and see if it works there.
