Big Grin
I use XBMC on my XBOX but now want to setup a PC in bedroom as well. I was told the Linux version was the best to use so even though I have little experience with Linux I downloaded XBMC Live and burned the bootdisk. I booted up the PC with the boot disk and was greeted with nothing but "grub>" I typed help and tried a few things with no luck. I also noticed that along with the ISO came "installXBMC.py" and "installXMBCfromISO.sh". These are scripts that I thought could help me so I coppied them to a USB RAM disk and pluged them in the same computer. The only problem is I still can not run them from the "grub>". I tried the linux commands I know without luck. Does any one have a dummies edition that can help a Windows guy install this live version for Linux. I just want to end up with a PC that boots to XBMC like my XBOX does.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I have no experience with the live Xbmc thingy. I use Linux per default on my PC and here's what I did to use Xbmc (which I like very, very ,very much!!!!).

1. Install Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty)
2. Install Xbmc

If you've ever installed Windows before on a computer, then the above procedure will be easy for you. But beware: if you want to install Windows and Linux dual boot on the same PC then you should always back-up your data first!!! And beware w/ formatting and partitioning your harddrive. If you want to install Linux on a PC w/ no other operating system on it then it will be easy. Smile

Good luck.

P.S. If you've got a Grub error (grub = grand unified boot loader) then you're a bit in trouble. Grub loads your OS. So if Grub is not nice to you, then you've got no OS to use to 'correct' Grub itself. So therefore I'd start all over if I were you. Shocked

1.) Donwload a iso from http://www.mythbuntu
2.) Burn it ..
3.) Boot from cd and select installation if you dont have a tv-card do not install mythbackend and mythfrontend
If you have tv-card and wishes to us this inside xbmc there is script called mythbox .... or make pm

4.) edit the following file as root

/etc/apt/sources.list

end add the following 2 Lines ...

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/jaunty-ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/jaunty-ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

after this make
apt-get update ; apt-get upgrade ; apt-get install xbmc

greetings from switzerland

addendum 2. Installing XBMC in Ubuntu 9.04 'the Jaunty Jackalope', summary:

1. See this topic on the Xbmc forum. It may be a bit overwhelming.

2. Add the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list (you need superuser rights, i.e. use 'sudo'):
Quote:#My XBMC sources from: [https://launchpad.net/~team-xbmc/+archive/jaunty-ppa]
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/jaunty-ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/jaunty-ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

3. Surf to this XBMC PPA site for Ubuntu Linux 'Jaunty'.

4. Follow the instructions on this page under 'Adding the keys using GNOME' to do 'things' with a public key, key files etc., etc. Confused

5. Now simply use Synaptic to install Xbmc.

Note: this is NOT the usual way in which software is installed in Linux. Usually one starts Synaptic, selects a few programs to install and clicks on 'Apply'.
