[MAC] Help with Mac Mini and the Apple Remote?
#1
Question
Here is the situation:

MacMini with Intel Chip
Apple Remote
XBMC 9.04.1 Repack

I installed XBMC by dragging it into the applications folder. After starting, I have one of three things happen.

1.) The Apple Remote fails to control the display. Mouse and keyboard respond as expected.
2.) After a delay of 30 Seconds -1 Minute, Apple remote will start to respond, but also still control the Volume Up/Down while traversing menus. Also, tapping Menu loads FrontRow on top of XBMC.
3.)The Apple Remote will Work, but menu will still load front Row.

I have been pulling my hair out trying to get this to work, and have searched the forums before posting to make sure I wasn't doing something stupid. Please help!

I have tried disabling the remote in settings, and exiting the program, and then setting it back to standard, and restarting the program. the above 3 situations remain.

Hi Dragoon209,

please post xbmc.log to pastebin and link it here. To see what's going on with the remote helper, you'll also need to pastebin relevant parts of the system log. For this open Console.app (Applications->Utilities->Console.app) click on "All messages", start XBMC and then c&p what shows up.

There's a bug in 9.04.1 (fixed in svn), that once you change the remote setings in XBMC, you'll need to restart XBMC to get the remote going again.

cheers,
mdd

Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.
Do not e-mail XBMC-Team members directly asking for support. Read/follow the forum rules. If you don't have the time to read them, please don't take the time to post in this forum!
For troubleshooting and bug reporting please make sure you read this first.

Could you tell me where to locate the xbmc.log file?

Following is the Copy and Paste of what was in the console. I cleared it before running XBMC.

Code:
7/13/09 11:56:33 AM ntpd[14] time reset -0.130287 s
7/13/09 10:05:02 PM /Applications/XBMC.app/Contents/MacOS/XBMC[4203] CPSGetCurrentProcess(): This call is deprecated and should not be called anymore.
7/13/09 10:05:02 PM /Applications/XBMC.app/Contents/MacOS/XBMC[4203] CPSSetForegroundOperationState(): This call is deprecated and should not be called anymore.
7/13/09 10:05:02 PM /Applications/XBMC.app/Contents/MacOS/XBMC[4203] CPSSetForegroundOperationState(): This call is deprecated and should not be called anymore.
7/13/09 10:05:03 PM [0x0-0xaf0af].com.teamxbmc.xbmc[4203] Using key code for OSX 10.5

Note that on this attempt, the XBMC start logo/splash screen was up for the 30 second delay, and afterwords, the remote worked perfectly. I will try and get the other two results I mentioned, and post the console listing from those as well. Thanks!

Found the log I think. Is it what is located further down in the console?

Following is the log, including any events from my previous post.

Okay, Held Menu, and got the XBMC to start. Now, it starts immediately, but the remote is not locked. When pressing up and down on the remote, I hear the Mac volume change noise, but the menu selection does not change. Further presses of the remote menu button open Front Row on top of XBMC.

Hey Dragoon209,

thanks for the logs. Unfortunately the only strange thing I see is
Code:
7/13/09 10:06:16 PM com.apple.launchd[81] ([0x0-0xaf0af].com.teamxbmc.xbmc[4203]) Stray process with PGID equal to this dead job: PID 4206 PPID 1 XBMCHelper

and I've pretty much no idea what went wrong :/

What version of OSX are you running? (btw, please see this sticky to not get asked all those silly questions one after another )

As we switched to a new helper-application for the AppleRemote on OSX after 9.04.1, you could try a recent svn build and see if that fixes it.

cheers,
mdd

Tested with SVN (andyblac's SVN build of XBMC for Mac:- rev19213)

Problem still exists, but is better, and manifests itself in slightly different ways. (At least a little more consistent now!)

Now the remote is completely unresponsive from the Mac Desktop. Tapping or holding Menu has no function.

Once launched manually, XBMC will do one of two things.
1.) Pause at XBMC Splash screen for an extended period of time. After it finally leaves, Main Menu Appears, and Remote functions as normal.

2.) Main Menu loads immediately. Remote will not function until a delay comparable to the one waiting for the splash screen to disappear passes. Afterwards, Remote functions as normal.

In case of the 2nd manifestation, the Mouse is still usable to select items.

The following is from a launch with the 2nd type of manifestation. (Two console posts, odd updates occurred after the program had closed.)

Console:
Code:
7/14/09 11:19:43 PM [0x0-0xff0ff].com.teamxbmc.xbmc[6587] CRITSEC[0xdf9b60]: Trying to leave destroyed section.
7/14/09 11:26:01 PM /Applications/XBMC.app/Contents/MacOS/XBMC[6615] CPSGetCurrentProcess(): This call is deprecated and should not be called anymore.
7/14/09 11:26:01 PM /Applications/XBMC.app/Contents/MacOS/XBMC[6615] CPSSetForegroundOperationState(): This call is deprecated and should not be called anymore.

NOTE/Addition to the console above:

After leaving the program and starting to type this post, I left Console open in the background. About halfway through typing, and well after I had closed the program, the following appeared in the console.

Code:

Hey Dragoon209,

unfortunately the version you're using is even older than 9.04.1.
First line in xbmc.log tells you the version:
Code:
Starting XBMC, Platform: Mac OS X.  Built on Apr  3 2009 (SVN:19197M)
where SVN:xxxx is the relevant part (9.04.1 was 20ksomething).
Most of the time TheQuestor has up2date builds available (http://www.sshcs.com/xbmc/) but there seems to be a build problem currently. Should not take much time to solve it...

cheers,
mdd

Blush *facepalm* I can only say it was late, and I was tired. I can't believe I didn't notice that!! I'll download a new version when I get home. I got the build from a forum post stating it had the latest SVN build... Guess I should of checked the date.

I'm on a short trip until Sunday, I'll post back then. Thanks for all your help!

Back! However... I have taken a slightly different route then I laid out above. I reformatted, and reinstalled. I'm going to see what a fresh install does to it... It was a work machine so we could test out how our website and various other teaching tools were going to look on OSX. Yay work hand downs!

Okay, Bad News.

Completely reformatted, and reinstalled. However, I am still having the remote lag issue. I have installed the latest SVN build from http://www.sshcs.com/xbmc/. Log entry listed below.

01:58:29 T:2685101856 M:352243712 NOTICE: Starting XBMC, Platform: Mac OS X. Built on Jul 23 2009 (SVN:21846)

The only issue I am getting now, is that after launching XBMC, the remote will not function for up to two minutes. I can use 'Menu' on the remote to launch it, but after that, it will still delay.

Mouse and Keyboard control will function the entire time.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions! As stated in my last post, this is a completely fresh install, and nothing has been installed except the latest updates, and then XMBC. Thanks!

Console:
Before Launching XBMC-After Reboot - PasteBin
After Launching XBMC - Pastebin

Log:

PasteBin

Thanks!

Hi Dragoon,

thanks for the report.

Bad thing is, this does not happen every time for me, I was just able to reproduce it once :/

Does it happen on every launch for you? If so, can you tell the exact steps to reproduce (e.g. only after reboot, on first launch, ...)

Thanks,
mdd

Unfortunately, it happens every launch. On my setup, I can't HELP but reproduce it.

It occurs after a reboot, or any subsequent launch. I have managed to work around the problem by setting 'Shutdown' to 'Suspend' in the System Settings. It does not occur on Resume from suspend.

Hope that helps!
