I have written two guides on my homepage, based on my HTPC experience:
Part 1: http://lars.werner.no/?p=175
Part 2: http://lars.werner.no/?p=177
There are several (better) guides on getting XBMC up'n'running, but hopefully people find my version valid as a supplement.
On my Asrock 330 I had several lockups based on the mce_usb driver, and these scripts could help another friend in need.
The control in desktop using the remote could help people who swap between other programs etc...
