1080p CPU vs. GPU

Hi,
i am building a HTPC and i just came across the question if i need additionally to the onboard graphics a pcie one. after a few searches on google i found out that xbmc lately included GPU acceleration for GPUs.
This is probably the cheaper and more power saving solution than getting a high end cpu.

but still i am not sure how much power i need.
i read that GPU decoding works on nvidia geforce 8 and up. is that true? are there other cards supported?
what cpu should i put into the htpc at least. is a dual core still recommended?

i want to get 1080p h.264 material playing. i think other stuff like divx encoded DVDs should be an ease for such a setup. or am i getting this wrong? can al decoding tasks be put on the GPU?

originally, i am a mac user so i am not that into hardware. i really appreciate your ideas.

There are alot of people running xbmc on an nvidia Ion platform, those are Intel Atom CPUs with very low power consumption and an onboard chipset that takes care of the HD stuff, you don't need much cpu power at all.
Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.
Do not e-mail XBMC-Team members directly asking for support. Read/follow the forum rules.
For troubleshooting and bug reporting please make sure you read this first.

Ok, now I'm confused. I thought it was impossible to have XBMC use the GPU to run 1080p movies...? I thought XBMC was restricted to the use of the CPU...?


If this is true I should be able to use my mac mini's gpu to play MKVs?
do I have to enable this in XBMC?

Translation:

GPU video decoding works on XBMC for Linux only, and only with NVIDIA hardware 8400 or newer (or maybe 8200Huh). You should have 512 video RAM if you want to do 1080p.

For example this cheap card is enough?
