No sound with Ubuntu Minimal
#1
Hello,

I installed XMBC with Ubuntu minimal, as told in the guide.
Everything works fine, except of the sound. There isn't any output.
I tried several guides from the Ubuntuforum and the ALSA-webpage. Also I installed OSS but never getting the sound to work.
My Test.wav played everytime, and either aplay -vv or ossplay showed activity. Also I'm hearing some stuttering when starting an mp3 in XMBC.

When I use the XBMC-Live CD everything works fine, but I dont want to wipe my hardrive by installing this version.

Is there the possibility to copy the Live-Version over my installed? Or get the sound settings?

My system is an GA-K8NF9 with nforce4 chipset. Im using the AC97 soundchip. For further information only ask.

Thank you

Ninerian

Sounds like your linux-fu isn't strong enough for the bottom-up approach. Try top-down instead, install full desktop ubuntu and remove features until you get what you want.

You don't have to install the Live version, you can just run it off of a bootable flash drive or something similar.

Thanks for your answer.

Is there a guide for the top-down way?

I don't want to install it onto an stick. So this solution isn't necessary for me.

Step 1) Install Ubuntu, Step 2) Install XBMC (through PPA). If you need to use digital playback then you'll need to disable/uninstall pulseaudio.

I found this thread in the How-To Tips and Tricks Forum: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=44019

It covers Hardy and Intrepid, should be pretty close for jaunty.

If you really want to start minimal, check one of those howtos:

intel: http://forum.xbmc.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=52
radeon: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=174854
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.
