I have a softmodded xbox runnng XBMC and i need to know if it possible to replace the dvd drive with a PC one. Ive made a pretty cool new case for it and i have a slot load dvd rom drive that im desperate to try and fit in.....

If this is not possibly how do i getrid of the error 12 Service required screen that comes up when i remove the optical drive completly...

i know that it is possible to completly remove the drive as i have seen several mods without them...

I gather it's possible to do this with a softmod, but I can never remember the particulars. Basically you need to leave some of the old DVD drive in there so the system won't throw that error. Or something.

An easier method is to TSOP flash the system, but that's not possible if you have a 1.6 console (in which case a modchip could achieve the same thing).

Note that when using a PC drive, the console won't be able to boot retail game discs.
