Run XBMC on Apple TV from USB
#1
I was wondering, is it possible to run XBMC from a USB so that I dont have to modify the apple tv? Just plug it in and reboot the ATV and run straight from the USB?

Thanks in advance

Yes, I run this way all the time for development with XBMC for Linux on the AppleTV.

Running XBMC for Mac will be harder as the AppleTV is quite finicky about booting/running the AppleTVOS from a USB drive. Plus you have a chicken/egg problem. You need to enable USB support for boot but the standard methods for doing this enables USB support after boot. Buzzz, road kill.

I have no problem using the patch stick first, and then from that point forward use the USB....

I would maybe consider modifying a patch stick installation and not have the menus installed into the atv after modifying, so that it doesn't look like it was modded, and then anytime I wanted to run XMBC I would just plug in the USB....

Do you think that would work?

You could do, but why? What are you trying to achieve?

Is there a particular reason for wanting to run from usb?

I think the more pertinent question is why are you trying to hide the fact that AppleTV would be modified?

Well, honestly, I have some streams that I watch on my XBMC at home, and when I go to my brothers house to house sit, I would like to be able to watch my streams (porn), via his apple tv which is connected to his 60 LCD. He is very anal with his equipment and I dont want him to know that I FUCK3D with it.

That's all.....

Hahaha, your best solution is to do a XBMC for Linux install to a external USB drive. Mind that you have to do it the AppleTV way, XBMC Live will not work as the disk format is not what the AppleTV wants. Use ubuntu 8.04, it's very stable and relatively easy to install and setup.

Well thank you very much. I will look in to that now and give it a try. Anything tricky that I should know?

never, never use fdisk on a GPT format/partition disk. use parted and you need the "special" version that knows about atvrec partition. atv-bootloader site has all the details.

Ran into a problem with partions. I got an error when I tried to run sudo parted -s /media/untitled set 1 atvrecv on

Returned:
parted: invalid told: atvrecv

Can you help?

Ok, I have to admit, that I'm very new when it comes to Linux, and I've been trying for about a month now to get XBMC to run off the USB so that it looks like that ATV has never been touched.... But with no success... Would anyone be willing to help or do it for me? Or maybe a walk through of sort.... I would be willing to ship you $50 via paypal to do it.

I cant seem to get it.... I've tried via linux method, I've tried via OSX method... Isn't there a way to make the patch stick app do it automatically? I keep getting screwed up when I try to partition the USB properly. I don't normally give up, but I've been going on and on for over a month.....

Any takers?

Any updates for linux on a stick for AppleTV with crystalhd support? Want to test the difference of the performance between OSX and Linux, but don't to kill my actual set up
