Most of my video library is standard DVD rips to 'VOB' format. If I start playing one of those movies, the system doesn't acknowledge any user input until the movie actually starts playing. That means I have to go through any preview stuff and get to the menu and then click 'Play movie' before I can stop watching the movie and go back to the xbmc menus. Is this expected or unavoidable or am I the only one who stores movies like this (storage space is not yet a concern for me, so I prefer to keep my library uncompressed compared to the original source)?

Yes I had it too, seems to depend on what skin you use as to if a OSD will come up when you press a button. if you are able you can map 'x' to one of your remote buttons this stops a film no problem.
