i am a total linux noob
so i downloaded and installed it on my pc then i logged in using xbmc and then when im in i get a command prompt how do i open up the nice looking media center i tested on my xp laptop?? i wiped my whole 200 gb hardrive for this so i had a mediacenter pc

I don't use Xbmc-Live but I think that Xbmc should be started by a init.d script. Try to follow the indications in the following link to give all needed informations to find out the origin of your problem:
