Could I get someone to tell me the command to kill X? I've tried changing run levels to 3, but X is still running and the drivers won't install until I kill X.

I think I can answer to you, this is the method I use with ubuntu:
First go into console with CTRL+ALT+F1
Log in
Stop GDM : sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
Install NVIDIA: sudo sh NVIDIAxxxxxx.run
Start GDM : sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
Or reboot : sudo reboot

Hope this help

I don't have a file called "gdm" in /etc/init.d. I use XBMC Live on an asrock ION330. Is there any other way to kill X?

No, I still get the message that I have to exit X before installing.
When I watch on my tv screen I see a little grey box with unreadable content in it.

This is how I did it on xbmc live:

1: sudo killall xbmc.bin

2: wget http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Li...3-pkg1.run

3: sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run

4: sudo reboot

I did the following:

1. sudo apt-get remove xbmc-live
2. sudo apt-get remove xbmc
3. sudo reboot now
4. sudo nvidia-installer --update
5. sudo reboot now
6. sudo apt-get install xbmc-live
7. sudo apt-get install xbmc
8. sudo reboot now

After the last reboot everything worked fine Cool

All I did was go to shutdown menu and select "Exit XBMC".

After that it brought me to the command prompt, logged in followed instructions on first post.

I feel frickin stupid, I follow the instructions to the letter, but after I type in:

wget http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Li...3-pkg1.run

I get this:
Resolving us.download.nvidia.com: an Ip address
Connecting to us.download.nvidia.com: an ip adress ...connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response.... 404 not Found

This is driving me nuts, any ideas?

are you copying and pasting the URL as is? because i did the same and got the same error ... but then i quickly realized the URL is shortened and i type the full URL by hovering over the link in the first post ... also, its case sensitive so type everything exactly as is ...

I was copying the whole url, but didn't know it was case sensitive, will give it a try thanks.

UPDATE: It was the case sensitive thing, working perfectly now! Thanks guys

yea use the nvidia repositories like normal people do. this way of installing the driver is ok but its far from desirable.

I presume you all have the skills how to add sources and keys?

if not go to my topic -- my signature its on first post.

Just to say I had this issue but post 21 resolved it for me. I'll add the nvidia PPA later on. Many thanks

The steps in Post 21 worked for me too. I used 'Exit XBMC' and then logged in (xbmc/xbmc in my case) and then did the steps in Post 21. During the NVIDIA set up, I selected No when prompted to automatically update the X configuration file. Not sure if that will cause problems for me later but VDPAU is now working properly.
