Hacking the Boxee Box to run XBMC?
#61
snoopy78 Wrote:hi guys...

currently i'm in romania for business purposes...and will be back on sunday... so i'll test the DVD ISO for sure on weekend.. abt the BR ISO ..tell me how to create one...then i'll rip one of my BRs for testing purposes....

ok...how i got my boxee box (i know it's not official released now)..i just got a TEST sample... this means i got it for testing purposes...and i really like to hack it bcz i personally prefer xbmc over boxee.....

in my opinion the playback of local sources (QNAP TS-509 SMB Shares) is more easy with xbmc than it seems to be with boxee box... also i'm not into social networking...so i don't need stuff like facebook....

hope this helps everyone....

p.s... what i know is that you can update the boxee box via USB... but you need a special Firmware Image to do so.... so maybe this could be the way to hack the box....

Found this on Boxee twitter:-

@twoboxen LOTS of UI changes. Tuner in the plans, but not working on it, yet.
The normal XBMC log IS NOT a debug log, to enable debug logging you must toggle it on under XBMC Settings - System or in advancedsettings.xml. Use XBMC Debug Log Addon to retrieve it.

Next month D-Link is shipping BoXee Boxes in Europe.
Is there more info if it is already possible to run XBMC on it?

Anyone been able to test this Boxee BOX, looks like it would be the best all-in-one mediaplayer! Would be perfect if you could choose between XBMC and Boxee running on it!

snoopy78 Wrote:Hello,

i just checked the settings of the Boxee Box...

with HDMI i can select
- Dolby Digital (AC3) capable reciever
- reciver supports DTS
- Dolby Digital Plus (DD+) capable reciever
- Dolby TrueHD capable reciever
- DTS-HD capable reciever
- LPCM 7.1 capable reciever

Smile hope this helps you

In researching the boxee box this morning, I came across this thread in the Boxee fora describing DTS-HD issues. There's a link in that thread to an open bugtracker item which says that DTS-HD is NOT currently supported/manifested by boxee (despite the chip being able to process it)...

I'm confident that this will be resolved in the future, but I want assurance now...which is how I ended up at unimatrix1.

Despite the menu options and chip spec's, would folks please keep an eye out for confirmation that a boxeebox running xbmc can pass through HDMI 1.4 era signals (DTS-HD and 3D)?

Cheers!

That comment was in reference to an ION box, not a Boxee box.

Well, you cannnot get such a box (or atom) for such a prive. However, in the case you can only use boxee, the money is somehow wasted.

Speaking of ION boxes, this is pretty nice:

Foxconn NT-330i - $199, just add memory and HDD.

defected07, we already have a thread about this netbox. I use this exact device as an HTPC (XBMCbuntu) and love it, but as you mentioned you have to add RAM, HDD, and a remote solution, so the price is somewhat relativised, esp. if you want to go the full route and add a small SSD as I did. also keep in mind that these Ion boxes seldom work out-of-the-box even with newest XBMClive builds so you need at least a bit of understanding with linux.

boxee is some kind of instant-on XBMC experience, but we'll have to see how it works out when the first customers get their boxes. I still don't like the whole social networking stuff, and I absolutely like to have full customizable control over my XBMC experience. also in the meantime there's some serious competition going on in this media box business, esp. given the fact that Google TV goes to market at the same time and might have similar playback capabilities, at least when there's an app for that (and it might well be an XBMC port *winkwink*)

I wish these guys all the luck in the world, but they're a littlebit late on the market, given the problems with the tegra2 chipset and the complete hardware switch to the intel CE4100. and speaking from a (german) customer perspective, the magic border is 199€ for such a device. 229 might already be too much for a lot of customers, given that similar (more simple, granted) realtek- or sigma-based players retail for starting around 100€. finally, the advantage of having a fully connected device with library mode and all the additional features is not obvious to joe average.
