Hacking the Boxee Box to run XBMC?
I've been playing with it for the last day and I still don't know if I'm going to keep it. Playback is smooth as can be but I miss xbmc. I guess I'll wait to see if there is any progress with porting xbmc over.

I love XBMC for the control it gives you over appearance and media, but I like how simple applications are with Boxee. Having one single box that runs all my internet apps like Pandora, Hulu, and Netflix but also plays my local content through an XBMC app would be the holy grail of content boxes for me.

In regards to what I said earlier, here's a thread I started in the Apps section at the Boxee forum.

Rather than port XBMC over to Boxee, how about an XBMC app?

Generically speaking, what about other apps like my NES ROM emulator and whatnot. I can set up XBMC so that I can call my ROM emulator on my PC but it's not clear to me how this will work with the Boxee Box. Will software need to be written for this platform or is there a whole slew of software that will already work?

I realize that XBMC needs to run on the box before we start looking at these other areas but it'd be nice to know what this thing is capable of in the long term.

Sorry bud, my receiver doesn't support that so I can't check. Have you checked avsforums?

That'd be wonderful, just placed my order on Amazon. One for me to hopefully hack to pieces, one for me to idiot-proof for my father.

Big Questions to those that Buy A Boxee Box:

Is is the EXACT same Boxee that is on PCs?

How responsive is the interface?

Can it bitstream HD audio?

What streaming pluggins come with it?

Does it get very hot after use?

The normal XBMC log IS NOT a debug log, to enable debug logging you must toggle it on under XBMC Settings - System or in advancedsettings.xml. Use XBMC Debug Log Addon to retrieve it.

For the price you paid on that, wouldn't you have been better off just buying something like an Acer Revo, that you know you could install XBMC onto?

from what ive heard on avs and boxee forums it sounds like the new version of boxee is worse than the beta. This thing really needs xbmc. And I hope xbmc can get bd menus working somehow if they hack this. I also heard the remote for the bb is useless in the dark.

Only from what I've read, I do have one on order but haven't gotten it yet.

Newer build of Boxee than PC version with a new UI, a lot of people not at all happy with the new UI and I'd agree it looks a step backwards. Various UI issues being complained about, no proper back button, unable to filter easily between own content and online content.

Seems reasonably fast, though coverart image caching is slower than PC and refreshes too much, no proper cache for the data. Someone suggested on AVS to use SDcard as storage which seems a good idea I hope Boxee implement that.

Can bitstream DTS-MA, TrueHD bitstreaming is not working properly it is decoded to LPCM but Boxee rep says they are aware of this and planning to fix it.

Sounds like the Boxee Box needs a fair bit more of polish given the level of complaints from those who just got theirs, seems to have a network buffering problem thats plaguing owners as well.

Another review here with screenshots of new UI. Also an analysis and comparison against the older UI.

I have a Boxee Box (2 actually) and it takes between 4-5 minutes to load my library of 200 TV shows (10,000 episodes).

Navigate into one of the shows and then go back to the show list and it starts all over again for 4-5 minutes.
If the screensaver kicks in it starts all over again for 4-5 minutes when you wake it.

Running XBMC on an XBOX takes 10 seconds to load my TV library !!!

Was really hoping to replace my XBOXs with these (really wanted an appliance replacement) but unless someone can figure out how to get XBMC on them, they are useless and frustrating.
