So it isn't the 'ø', but a normal error with Windows XP user accounts.

It is not my understanding, look at the comment at the end of the ticket. This problem with windows account only occurs if there is a Latin Char, it is kind of your case with 'ø' .

I had the same problem
1) Uninstall XBMC
2) Install XBMC but dont choose C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\XBMC for the data

Man I had troubles getting the plugins to work on my vista laptop, first it did not work at all, no matter what I tried installing them plugins, this map, that map, app data, prog files folder etc etc. Nada!
Nothing worked, then I re-installed after doing some surfing and reading some forums, still no plugins, tried the portable installation and there was the runtime error.
After all this i found this post and there was the answer after again troubling with the user account stuff from vista.
Bogus! You're my man. I got it to work quite fine now and just wanted to personally thank you man!
