How do YOU play your Blu-ray?
#1
My goal here is to create a centralized location where someone can see all the different methods of playing blu ray rips since it is not officially supported by xbmc. The data is on the forums, but its scattered few a far between.

So i guess ill start:

Bluray discs - Using the latest svn (26237) with bluray detection (http://trac.xbmc.org/changeset/25791) to launch powerdvd if a bluray disc is inserted and played.

Bluray rips - mount full iso to daemon tools, autorun kicks off powerdvd. (looking for a better, more consistent way)

I'm very new to XBMC, as of a few days ago new, and am just tinkering for now.

For Bluray iso images, I'm playing with bher20's automount script that uses Slysoft's virtual clone drive to mount the iso and launch the movie in your external player of choice. This allows you to select the movie from your library and have it play, hopefully without any more button presses (though it looks like you will see a series of splash and transitional screens as the various programs in the chain do their thing to get the iso playing). Not exactly ideal, but certainly better than doing it manually I guess.

I'm going to start playing with rips of various sorts... any suggestions are appreciated (I'm doing a forum search as we speak... how I ran across this thread). I'll try M2TS and h.264 transcodes for now.

I rip my blu ray discs to mkv format using AnyDVD HD, eac3to in combination with HDBRStreamExtractor, and MKVToolnix. The result is an mkv file with uncompressed video, lossless compressed audio, and embedded chapters. Of course, if you want menus, etc this option doesn't work.

AnyDVD decrypts the disc and has to be running for this method to work. The eac3to and HDBR combo demuxes the stream into a video file, an audio file, and chapter file. You can pick and choose which stream you want to use for the audio. Then I use MKVToolnix to mux all three files together into one mkv file.

This seems like the most efficient way to save space and get a very high quality copy of your BD on your hard drive. The only issue I run into is that some BDs have several m2ts streams instead of one for the main movie. I usually just rip those discs to iso format instead because I don't feel like picking through multiple streams.

Although it doesn't have support for BD+ like AnyDVD, it does handle just about everything else and goes straight to MKV files. The beta is free.

Does anyone have a full understanding as to why XBMC will not play blu-ray isos? I even have the menus ripped out using clownBD and they will not play. I obviously do not know much, but i wouldn't think it requires a lot more coding than any other file type. If the XMBC team would complete this task i think the program would be an answer for everyone.

I use a process similar to SikiMo

AnyDVD to rip to image
eac3to to extract the streams and package the video into an mkv
Suprip to convert the subtitles (if necessary - I only keep forced for english titles)
MKVtoolnix to mux the chapters and audio into the mkv file

I like this approach because it leaves the video untouched, and the only audio adjustments are to extract the core tracks from HD audio streams and I also re-code DTS audio into AC3 as I have a component that doesn't like DTS.

as far as making a ts, m2ts file, iso or even avchd goes:

http://www.clownbd.com/

is amazing. all of your solutions seem like way to much work. It walks you through selecting streams, audio, subtitles etc. It uses eac3to, tsmuxer and others automatically. Then it can use imgburn to automatically make iso of main movie as well.

I guess i will just have to give up on my sweet sweet isos and convert to m2ts.

give clownBD a try though, i'm sure it will accomplish what you need and more.

I paid $49 for Pavtube blu-ray ripper which enables i copy BD on HDD of my PC for local playback,on iphone for playback, play Blu-ray movie on HDTV via WDTV HD Media Player.

I prefer to this software, because it handles all versions of Blu-ray discs and allows me to set subtitle and dubbings.

I rip using MakeMKV and watch with my Mini C2D w/ Crystal HD. This works best for me as I will have all of my BDs on hard drives within the next week. I have read about using MakeMKV to directly read a BD and stream using UPNP without having to step through ripping the movie. Maybe I'll give this a try when I get home.

I use Anydvd hd and ToNmt to rip the movie to m2ts.

Very simple:
1. Insert BD.
2. Wait ~10 seconds for Anydvd hd to recognize.
3. Start ToNmt and select Auto Source.
4. Set the destination.
