After a some reading, I get the impression that there maybe a chipset or driver limitation that prevents hardware decoding of 854 pixel (horizontal or vertical) resolutions videos. So ION based setups would need to default to software rendering?
Could anyone confirm if this limitation is indeed true?
If so how well does say Atom 330 handle 720p-ish e.g. 854x1280 etc using software decoding?

Not sure why you think that just a quick read of the forum and your see plenty of people happily viewing 1080p (1920x1080)

Actually, I stand corrected, it is actually listed in newer drivers..
"GPUs with this note may not support H.264 streams with the following widths: 49, 54, 59, 64, 113, 118, 123, 128 macroblocks (769-784, 849-864, 929-944, 1009-1024, 1793-1808, 1873-1888, 1953-1968, 2033-2048 pixels)."
Keyword there is may, if you have a clip upload it and someone will check.

I'm pretty sure a width of 854 works on my Revo with ION LE. All of my DVDs are encoded with H.264 (x264) in Handbrake with the Anamorphic Strict setting, using the .MKV container. This usually gives a display resolution of 854 x XXX.
Here is the question:
If this width was not supported, would these files fail to play back altogether? Or would the DVDPlayer just display the movie in the storage framesize?

There was a thread about this somewhere a long time ago, but i can't find it.
From memory, i believe that if it comes across a framesize that it can't play or vdpau doesn't like then it falls back to software decoding.
Also the key word in it is "may not support", i believe in the original thread it mentioned that there was occasional macroblocking.
Or i could be wrong - it was a long time ago that i remember this thread coming up. From a more practical point of view, its not something that has been complained about, so assume it doesn't effect most people ;-)
