I have the same problem but under XP
if you play music with dvdplayer ?(context menu, play with, choose dvdplayer and not paplayer) (this work for me).

if I run my audio out to hdmi (ati audio), music (with paplayer) operates on the speakers of my TV.
With my optical out (ASUS Xonar), no music with paplayer, but works with dvdplayer. Also sounds menu xbmc works

Before installing my ati card (HDMI), everything worked perfectly.

What is your audio output set to in your xbmc settings?

My current settings are:

- Digital output
- AC3 compatible
- DTS compatible

- Soundouput device
- default

- transfer soundoutput
- iec958

I just cannot hear sound in XBMC when i play .mp3 files. And than i have another problem wich is that my dvd player of the Asrock wont open when i played it. I have to manualy restart the system before i can get the DVD out.

Anyone familiar with this also?

Hi all,
I have have the exact same problem.

Movies appear to play fine, but nothing can be heard while Music is being played.

Ubuntu 9.10 32bit, i686
Zotac 9300-G-E board, Intel E3200.

Notes:
- I do have the updated Alsa drivers, v1.0.22.1.
- I cannot hear the ticks that XBMC is producing normally on key presses/navigation.
- The music appears to be playing (can see the spectrum analyzer jumping)
- I have the same settings as Fjerpje above, and I can select iec958 as sound output, but then I cannot hear any sound on both Movies and Music.

aplay -L:
Code:

Is it just music that doesn't play, or ALL ANALOG sound? I get this occassionally on my xbmc live install. Videos with DTS/AC3 work fine, but those with mp3, nav sounds, and music, don't.

The fix is in the 2nd post of this thread:

Music and navigation. Other than that, I do not have analog sounds - just DVDs.

The fix you mentioned did not work.

But. I saw some posts about alsamixer, and after messing around a little, I did find a solution.
As it turns out, there are three SPDIF devices on my ZOTAC 9300-G-E using the updated Alsa drivers, v1.0.22.1:
- S/PDIF
- S/PDIF Default PCM
- S/PDIF 1
Here are the S/PDIF settings before (audio not working):
Image
Here are the S/PDIF settings after (audio working):

So, as it turns out,
S/PDIF controls Analog audio (and is NOT enabled by default)
S/PDIF Default PCM controls Digital audio (and is enabled by default)
I have no idea about S/PDIF 1, turning it on/off has no effects whatsoever.

So snoxbox, while your referred solution did not solve my problem, I did find hints about fixing mine. And for that, thank you.
