XBMC, not as visually appealing as WMC (Windows Media Center)?
#1
Now that I have your attention :-)

I'm really interested in switching from windows 7 media center to a XBMC/MythTV solution but am afraid that it's not going to be visually as appealing when it come to the EPG, only the EPG as everything else is visually STUNNING !

Anyone have any screenshots ? ...does anyone have any time to throw up a youtube vid of all things TV in XBMC ?

On a side note, any indication as to when scheduling of recordings from a MythTV backend will be possible from inside XBMC ?

lol ironically, Ive just descovered w7 MC and am thinking of moving from xbmc, mainly due to lack of hardware decoding support within windows which means 1080p mkv's use 90%+ cpu...

Ive just discovered several hacks for w7 which sort of covers etc... for films and tv.. so looing promising.. but as for the EPG, cant help you there, dont really use it for that....

As far as I know, XBMC doesnt cater form TV viewing.. but im not 100%, ive certainly not seen any options for it, and use of tv cards etc...

When I read the title of your post I figured this thread was going to be a fairly heated argument - definitely got my attention.

As far as EPG, XBMC does not currently support PVR functions to their full extent. The PVR-Testing branch is currently working on a unified frontend that will connect to many types of PVR backends (MythTV, VDR, Tvheadend). Once this is done the EPG and other 'normal' TV activities will be integrated much better. Here are some screenshots from Confluence running the testing branch, they show a concept of what the EPG may look like when done:

As far as when all this will be integrated into the main branch, your guess is as good as mine. When it is done would be my answer, I haven't seen any sort of timeline on that end.

That being said the native mythtv support has worked great for me for quite a long time now, although I don't usually watch live TV, just the recordings. The guide shows up kind of funny for live tv since it has be listed as items in a folder and not in a grid. Here is a link to the page if you just want to take a look: http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=MythTV#Watching_Live_TV

I'd also be interested in knowing as I'm tired of windows 7 media center and it's lackluster performance and annoying issues

If you have vdr or tvheadend I believe you can set these up via the pvr-testing2 branch and have access to those backends. Other backends will probably have to wait until the testing branch is merged back into the main and people start building addons for them. You can get pre-compiled binaries of the testing branch, here is a link to some threads where you can find them.
