SAMBA doesn't start on XBMC Live on first boot, causing Win7 problems
#1
I have an Asrock ION 330 htpc with XBMCLive on it installed. I also installed samba on it (using this handy guide: http://a8t8.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!251...!804.entry) so I could see the files in Windows 7.

All went well, but I dont see the drive in my network drives every time, even after refreshing lots of times. It's availability seems random. Sometimes I reboot the Asrock ION and it's there again, sometimes it isn't. Is there any way to improve it? Other drives on the network are always there, so it can't be my network settings.

The weird thing is, the XBMC's 'media servers' are there, all the time:

And after some random reboots:

It's there again. Could it be Samba isn't loading properly every time?

Anyone? Or maybe someone knows how to troubleshoot this one? I am kind of tired to reboot my Asrock ION every now and then just to see my files in windows...

I have the same trouble with ubuntu and win7. My workaround is to "map network drive". It's always shows up, even when my ubuntu computer does not.

I also did that, but the mapped network drive doesn't connect either...

Isn't there any other way to see what the problem could be here?

Try using a very basic smb.conf and go from there. Check this trouble shooting guide.

I will look at that link later on but I don't think it will help, since I did everything the same as a friend, using the same guides, same system, same xbmc builds and it works for him. Another friend with also the exact same system has the same problem as me though.

I honestly don't know the answer to this, but I edited the title a teeny bit to something slightly more specific.

hi there,
same problem, Samba sometimes doesnt start after boot. Its reported problem in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic, which is i believe base OS of Live.

Read here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasen...ing%20boot

Quote:Samba nmbd daemon not started during boot

On an Ubuntu 9.10 system with Samba installed, the nmbd daemon may fail to start on boot. To workaround this problem, restart the samba service once the system has finished booting by running sudo service samba restart. A fix for this issue will be provided in a post-release update. (462169)

Simply
Code:
sudo /etc/inid.t/samba start
or
Code:
sudo /etc/inid.t/samba restart
over SSH or from machine and everything is ok

Yes, thanks for the reply. I already found that command as you may have seen in the screenshot on the first page...but that isn't really a fix for the problem that it won't start at boot.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sourc...bug/462169 scroll down, someone says its fixed now in newest updates ... im having newest full Ubuntu 9.10, but sorry, i cant say if its ok now from my experience, because im running my HTPC 24/7 as server, so reboots are very rare and i have small "testing sample" of starts with or without samba :-)

It looks like it's fixed indeed, I've started XBMC twice now, and it loaded Samba without problems, great!
