[LINUX] XBMC as the frontend, but which backend for Live TV, MythTV or VDR?
#1
Im thinking of adding Live TV to my setup, is there anyone with exprience with MythTV and VDR and which one works the best?

I dont want to have to switch from XBMC to another frontend either, from what I understand the PVR branch you can use XBMC for the front end, EPG, schedule recordings or that is the goal of the project.

MythTV or VDR?

Another one to throw into the mix is tvheadend - i believe this is included in the xbmclive now too.

I'll +1 TvHeadend. Painless setup and has been working flawlessly for me.

do you need a tv tuner card for tvheadend?? also I have installed xbmc 9.11 on my hdd over ubuntu 9.10. Does this work on this or only on the xbmc live version?

There are packages for debian / ubuntu based systems and you should be able to build it for other platforms.

You aren't going to get much functionality out of it without a tv / sat / cable / some video input source...

I haven't tried the others, but I just setup a MythTV backend with four PC-HD5500 tuner cards and it works like a champ. The only thing that is missing is episode integration into the library, but I don't think the others do that either. Commercial skipping is great, but for whatever reason, it seems to work better on HD content instead of SD content. Live TV works fine and the mythtv:// source pulls down a current channel guide.

Mythweb is really nice, especially if you're in the states and you subscribe to SchedulesDirect.

Im leaning towards MythTV as I like the Idea of automatic comercial skipping.

Im looking at USB DVB-T sticks that are capable of HD, in NZ we have Freeview available via Satalite but only standard def, if you want HD you have to go Terrestrial with a UHF antena.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone that has as MythTV system setup and working with HD via a DVB-T card or stick.

I have a Zotac ION D-E 330 so PCIe is out unless I change for a newer board with the PCIe16 slot.

Looking at the AVerTV Digi Volar X A815 it appears to do 1080i/720p (my TV is only 1080i capable) so 1080p is not an issue.

The web site reports The Linux driver, has been a part of kernel 2.6.28

I wonder if anyone has had success with this USB DVB-T and Myth.

I'm running kernel 2.6.28.17

I'm very happy with mythtv. It does everything you could ever want. I would go with hts tvheadend, but it does not work with my hdhomerun, also it does not have the commercial skipping built in. I have heard there is a way you can do it though.

The HDHomeRun is a network 1080i dual tuner for $200 which will allow you to turn any computer on your network into a TV. unless you're going for superportability, it would be a better option then the avertv
Use mythicalLibrarian to make a library out of your MythTV files. Leave the recording to MythTV and use XBMC as your library.

Another +1 for HDHomeRun and MythTV - except I edit (remove commercials) the recorded stuff via MythTV front-end, then move it into the XBMC library.

What's wrong with mythCommFlag? I have mythtv set up like this to automate the entire process of getting files into the library:

  1. set up recording from mythweb
  2. record show
  3. userjob: myth comm flag
  4. userjob: mythicalLibrarian

mythicalLibrarian is a script I made to import mythtv movies and episodes into XBMC, automates the following processes:

  • Rename movies to foo/movies/Title (year).ext
  • Generate Comskip files for Commercial Skippping in XBMC
  • Identify episodes based on Title and Zap2it ID.
  • Downloads information from TheTvDb.com
  • Renames and moves the episode based on subtitle or original airdate to foo/episodes/title/title.SxxExx(subtitle).ext
  • Notificaton sent to my Ubuntu Desktop that the library has been updated
  • Tells XBMC to clean invalid files out of it's library
  • Tells XBMC to update it's library
  • Sends a notification to the XBMC UI that new episodes have been added
  • Maintains a list of what recordings have been added to the library and the times
  • Allows MythTV to serve the recordings from it's server
  • Allows MythTV to expire/delete the recordings when it needs space
  • If a mythicalLibrarian job fails, it makes a executable script for use at a later time (internet went down, or you havn't updated TheTvDb with your show info)

I'm still working on it though, and I would recommend it to EVERYONE. The worst thing that can happen is that it renames a few (about 1 in 400) episodes wrong. On my setup, it manages about 30GiB of recordings per day.
