I have a three large music collections: classical, modern, and children.
Usually, when I browse the music library, I know exactly which collection I want to choose music from. Currently, if I add all three collections to the XBMC library, they are all mixed together.
To work around this, I have two options:
1) Using file view, rather than library mode. This misses the whole point of the XBMC library.
2) Viewing music by genre. This requires modifying all the files in my library - erasing all existing genre data, and adding "classical","modern","children" to files in each collection. Not good.
It would be nice if one of the following would be possible:
1) Multiple music libraries, just as there is a TV and a Movie library. After entering the "Music" section, one would be able to choose a library to view. I think this is the preferred solution, though it might be harder to implement.
2) View the music library by source, just as you can view by genre or album.
I'd be happy to hear comments or ideas.
Add multiple libraries for music, or allow music library view by source?

You could do this using profiles, set each one up with the relevant source.
You could also map a button on the remote to switch between them. Or use smartplaylists... xbmcBoxes.com - The definitive source for xbmc hardware configuration and setup info Shuttle XS35GT Build and Review www.paulrae.com - my blog with lots of useful xbmc and htpc related articles How to enable debug logging and post a debug log How to post about a problem in a useful manner to get better help Debug file location I run XBMC on a selection of ION based xbmc appliances and a atv, all being feed by a opensolaris based NAS using zfs (8*1.5tb, 8 *1tb, 4*400gb). |

Profiles is another workaround. Seems a bit cumbersome for such a basic need. Besides - what about video? If profiles won't share media, then only one profile would have the video content. Not a very attractive option.
As for smart playlists - these are nice, but lose the library advantages. I wasn't able to get, say, an album view, with a smart playlist. Did I miss anything? Thanks!

You want an album smartplaylist in that case not a song smartplaylist. Just change the type.

Ah, but album playlists do not allow filtering by path (or at least not through the Confluence GUI). Argh!

True. An album is not restricted to a path, and nor should it be.
