Can I run XBMC on a Intel Pentium 4 computer? If so, which PCI graphic card to get?

That card is useless. Completely and totally useless for XBMC. Stick to the 8400GS.

I am a huge fan of those diamond sound cards. They work great in Linux, not so great in Windows 7.

What about this card?

I think I can get this at my local store. The only reason I ask about it because it says it doesn't do DVD decoding and video output is SDTV but the part number is exactly the same.

back and fourth.... I forgot about amazon! I got the card you suggested and the diamond sound card from amazon with free shipping and picked up a 25' HDMI cable too. The SPDIF cable wasn't free shipping and they wanted too much with shipping so I'll pick one up locally or maybe make my own. I have tons of coax laying around and crimper's.

There's some decent places to look for cables also if you haven't checked already :

So I ordered all the stuff to build up my P4 PC to be an HTPC. The day after, I read an article about how you can now install XBMC on the ATV2 and play 1080p content!

The ATV2 would have been perfect for what I am trying to do but I have already bought the parts for this PC now.... Do you think that in the long run I will see less problems and get better play back with my P4, 8400GS, 2GB RAM, Gbps system?

Thanks,

David

I have a similar situation.

I have the option for $70:
small form factor Dell: p4 3ghz 1GB ram 500GB HDD, dvd drive..
I already have a HD 5450 lying around that I picked up for cheap during the holidays...

Would an ATV2 be a better solution for $135 (Cad)?
I heard the ATV2 only plays 720p and has no support for a local usb storage.
