Same problem on Windows 7.
Has something to do with an Nvidea hdmi synchronising error in the audio/picture stream to the display/receiver. Audio drops out, and is not availble anymore (with the mentonoed error given). After reinitializing the HDMi it worked again.
I had this prob after a long suspend/sleep of my HTPC.

Solved with the little program 'HDMIYO'

I only get this with XBMC ... no other windows application.

Similarly when I was using my older machine with an ATI card ... no problem. This is only happening with my asrock / nvidia combo.

Will try HDMIYO.
