Some videos play, other don't

Hi all.

I bought an Acer Revo (1GB, 160GB model) yesterday. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 and then installed the latest XBMC for Linux.

For the most part it's now installed and working fine. However some videos simply refuse to play. I know there is nothing wrong with the files themselves as they play (albeit slowly) through vlc on the same box.

I haven't tried all my videos, but 2 examples are of my Battlestar mkv's and my Azumanga mkv's. Both show subtitles and have sound, but no video is displayed.

I have other high definition contect (BBC Planet Earth, mkv) which plays 100% perfectly.

I've tried numerous different video settings, always with the same result.

Any ideas? What other information do I need to give here?

I'm going to get some more info on the codecs themselves.

Also, how do I get the debug log? xbmc itself is not actually crashing so I don't think there would be one

Well I installed xbmc freak's live image and it now plays video perfectly.

Consider this issue resolved. not sure what the problem was, but as the live cd install works I'm not going to bother troubleshooting it. I do have a few other queries but I'll ask those in separate threads
