[LINUX] Problems with frame drops jumps (consume packet error)
#46
My system has two SATA-300 disks attached. Maybe that's related to the problem, like the harddisk using too much power or something like that.

I'm using Intel SSD on my System, 4GB Memory, E5300 as above on Zotac 9300 ITX board...

I have very very very minimal ubuntu.. Installed like this:

http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=69753

But still drops... I tried differented Live CDs and "installed" Live CDs... changed driver and everything.. I always have frame drops... so it couldnt have to do something with "load" problems Sad (in my case)

Hi!

I also have this problem.
For me it's mostly 720p MKVConfused that drops the most.
The TV-Series "Lost" is nearly unpossible to watch without getting mad.

Have Modelines for 50, 60 an 24.

I have a Zotac Ion board.
Ubuntu 9.10 and XBMC 9.11.

Help!

This issue has been thrown around for quite a while. Unfortunately, alot of the troubleshooting steps were lost after the lightning strike.

I too have a Zotac ION board and upgrading to SVN 28256 made a big difference on watching my recorded 720p TV shows. I am using MythTV as my backend, and can now play the MPEG file that is recorded without major issues. Converting to MKV with Handbrake still causes severe judder, but the MPEG files are relatively smooth.

One of the developers felt that this may be a limitation of the ION boards. I do not feel that is the case, because I loaded Mythbuntu on mine to test, and playback was smooth.

I have since stopped troubleshooting this, and am waiting until the next stable release. One of the things the developers have talked about implementing is the ability to use XBMC as a PVR frontend. Due to the popularity of the ION platform this issue will have to be resolved for that feature to work properly, and I have full confidence that the developers will have it resolved by then.

I agree!

I only have the judder problem with MKVConfused, mostly 720p, 1080p seams much better, nearly perfect I think.

ISO and IMG, no problem.

I'm in the same boat and remember the thread you are talking about where the devs attributed this to the Ion boards... Since then I've seen a few posts like you mention about problems with the scaler going from 720p to 1080p or vice versa (i.e. you have a 720 source and a 1080 resolution or the opposite, and XBMC has to scale it up or down to accommodate).

What I've found is that on 720p files that exhibit this problem, if I change the XBMC settings to output at 720p instead of 1080p, it will play flawlessly. Then of course I have to change it back to 1080p when I watch Bluray rips, so it's quite annoying, but it does at least minimize the issues.

Yup I concur - aside from a different machine or o/s I can't think of anything else to try so I'll wait for the next stable release. I cant really risk compiling since its the family tv system. Stables I can arrange to put in place! I await the next stable build with interest.

Meantime does ANYONE know how to block one specific mode from being picked up when starting up a box. The edid reports that 1920x1080_24 is available I'd like to block that so the system only switches between 50 and 60hz since 60hz doesnt show up glitches (I imagine the its flywheel effect that it has more frefreshes to play with)

I've tried modelines and other options but I always end up loosing all edid modes or having 24hz available. The only way around that at present is switching off the auto set refresh rate and forcing 60 / 50 hz depending on the material.

hm that would make sense actually as I feel like it happens way more the lower the quality of video i watch.

You guys don't happen to have enabled something else than bilinear scaling in osd? that would casue this type of problem.
Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.
Do not e-mail XBMC-Team members directly asking for support. Read/follow the forum rules.
For troubleshooting and bug reporting please make sure you read this first.

I am not home at the moment, but I believe it is set to AUTO. Not sure if that is something I changed while troubleshooting the issue, or if it set itself as default.

But if you play 1080 24 fps videos with no 1920x1080_24 mode available it will cause sever judder because it has to be played on 50Hz.

Hi there

I'm intending to keep the 60hz mode so it will use pulldown to show 24hz.

I was having this problem until I ran:

Code:
sudo apt-get install mplayer-nogui

which is what the updated XBMCbuntu guide says to do. Apparently it isn't using VDPAU even if it is selected.

Fixed my problem.

That's the very very long way to get libvdpau on your system Smile

I'm wondering if I have the same problem. Playback in 24Hz is never really smooth, I have small stuttering all the time, I loose a frame from time to time. Watched an tv series episode yesterday and had about 100 lost frames after an hour. Seems pretty much to me. And my log is full of these lines:
