XBMC Live - No smooth playback on Asrock ION 330
#1
Hello.

I have an Asrock ION 330 (2GB RAM) and I installed XBMC Live on it.
It works, but I have a problem with the video. I don't get a smooth playback.
I am sure it's because of the video settings. I have 1920x1080 at 50Hz.
Is there a way to change it to 24Hz, 23,976Hz or 59,94Hz? These refresh rates are not shown in the menu.
I also enabled "adjust display refresh rate to match video", but no change.
Can someone help me?
Please keep in mind that I have no experience with linux.
I just installed XBMC Live and it is my first encounter with that OS.
Maybe someone here could post some screenshots of the necessary settings.
Thanx.

Sounds like you need to edit your xorg.conf.

In xbmc hit ctrl+alt+f3

log in with ur username and pass (default is xbmc for both)

then type

Quote:sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Find the screen section and add these lines

Option "DynamicTwinView" "false"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI" "True"
Option "FlatPanelProperties" "Scaling = Native"

It should look something like this

Quote:Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Device0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
Option "NoLogo"
Option "DynamicTwinView" "false"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI" "True"
Option "FlatPanelProperties" "Scaling = Native"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection

To save hit ctrl+x and answer yes, back at the command promt type:

Quote:killall xinit

xbmc should restart and auto adjust refresh should now work (hopefully)

cheers

Cool. It works now. Thanx!! Now I only have very small judders sometimes.

I have videos with various refresh rates. 23,976Hz, 50Hz, 25Hz, 29,97Hz, progressive, interlaced etc. What are recommended settings in the video output section?

My settings right now are:

Resolution: 1920x1080 @ 60.00 - Full Screen -- should I change it? What is the difference between this setting and "default: 1920x1080 @ 60.00"?

Vertical blank sync: Let driver choose (requires restart) -- should I leave it this way?

Enable LCD/VFD (OFF) -- should I enable it? What is this setting for?

Now to the audio section.
I have an old receiver which can only handle Dolby Digital and DTS. My Asrock is connected via toslink cable. I only want the audio to go through the receiver.
What settings would be best in the audio output section if I also wanna be able to hear the TrueHD or DTS-HD MA audio tracks?

My settings are:
Audio output: Digital
-Dolby Digital (AC3) capable receiver (ON)
-DTS capable receiver (ON)

Audio output device (default) -- should I change something here?

Passthrough output device (ice958) -- should I change something here?

Downmix multichannel audio to stereo (OFF)

And at last, the playback settings:

Render method: VDPAU -- or should I switch it to auto detect?

Adjust display refresh rate to match video (ON)

Sync playback to display (ON) -- should be correct, if my receiver doesn't support LipSync, right?

AV Sync method: (Audio Clock) -- should I change something here?

Allowed error in aspect ratio to minimize black bars (None)

VDPAU Studio level color conversion (ON)

Activate teletext (ON)

Sorry, many questions!

I also found out that a blu ray movie (m2ts) starts to judder, when I enable subtitles. How come? Maybe the Asrock ION 330 is not fast enough?

You can read about the sync method here: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Vid...s#Playback
The lcd/vfd setting is for lcdproc, if you never heard of that don't turn it on.

I don't think the problem is with the ASROCK ION speed.

I can play 1980 movies fine....although I am downscaling to 720p on output as that is the max resolution supported by my plasma. I assume that the downscaling makes the box work harderHuh

Did you also check the amount of video memory assigned? You can do that in the BIOS.

I set it to 512MB. (I have 2GB installed)

How are your playback settings?
Adjust display refresh rate to match video (ON)

Sync playback to display (ON)

AV Sync method: (Audio Clock)

Downscaling uses less resources than displaying video at its native resolution or upscaling it.

I had not-so-smooth playback on my ASRock 330.

After setting Adjust display refresh rate to match video (ON)
Sync playback to display (ON)
AV Sync method: (Video) (not Audio, when was set to Audio playback wasn't smooth)
my installation works OK.
The only remaining problem is resolution of the menu itself (when not playing movies) - XBMC sends 1080/60i instead of 1080/60p. When playing movies it gives correct 24 (23.9 something) progressive correctly. Projector - Panasonic 4000.
