Ok I can't get ac3 or DD to passthrough my tv to my receiver correctly and my receiver only has optical, would this work or has anyone got something similar to this to work.

I'm using something very similar (actually, same chipset, I think) to output toslink to my receiver. However, the difference here is that my setup is XBMC (hdmi) -> TV (spdif) -> receiver. The usb box outputs music (mpd) separately over optical toslink to my receiver upstairs. So I can't speak as to whether passthrough will work with XBMC. But I can tell you that it's not terribly difficult to set up that usb soundcard for optical toslilnk.

For $10, you may as well give it a shot.
