I have been troubled with sound issues with this board + Ubuntu 12.04 x64 desktop + XBMC from the software repository (Eden, 11.x?).

This is how I got passtrough of multi channel audio to optical/SPDIF to work:
(credits goes to: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1...stcount=96)

1. Install pavucontrol and start it

2. Under Configuration, select:
Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output

3. Under Output devices, check checkboxes for AC3 and DTS.

4. Launch XBMC and go to Settings - System - Audio and use the following:
Audio output: Optical/SPDIF
Downmix: checked
AC3: checked
DTS: checked
Audio Output Device: "Pulse Audio Digital Stereo (IEC958)" (might be worded differently, don't remember exactly...)
Passtrough Device: "Pulse Audio Digital Stereo (IEC958)"

This did it for me. No editing of asound-files or anything.
When I upgrade my receiver to a HDMI capable one I will try the same method but with HDMI instead of IEC958.

(disclaimer: This post was hastely written just to remember how I did it. I will try to clean it up when I get energy to it Sleepy Ask questions to force me too)

upgraded to Frodo last night. so far pretty stable. (only time will tell, in Eden, the system locks up every 5-6 days)
