FF, RW and other seeking operations [XBMC on AppleTV w/Crystal HD]

Sad
Hello, I've been already asking around about this but didn't get any info so far...

I'm having quite a problem with watching bigger files on my ATV (> 2GB). I just don't know why seeking through movies is extremely slow, for example:

Code:
23:01:30 T:51638784 M:  5218304   DEBUG: Process - Start position set to last stopped position: 126000
23:01:54 T:52213248 M:  5275648   DEBUG: Thread 52213248 terminating (autodelete)
23:01:55 T:53536256 M:  4980736   DEBUG: Thread 53536256 terminating (autodelete)
23:01:55 T:51502080 M:  5201920   DEBUG: Thread 51502080 terminating (autodelete)
23:01:59 T:53781504 M:  5599232   DEBUG: Thread 53781504 terminating (autodelete)
23:02:22 T:51638784 M:  5939200   DEBUG: SeekTime - seek ended up on time 127711
It takes 52s to resume a movie that was played for only 2 minutes. If I wanted to resume more into the movie it would take 5-15 minutes to complete...:confused2:

It is the same if I want to skip (Fast Forward) while watching:
Code:
23:02:37 T:2684407808 M: 14036992   DEBUG: CAnnouncementManager - Announcement: PlaybackSeek from xbmc
23:02:37 T:2684407808 M: 14036992   DEBUG: OnPlayBackSeek - Playback skip
23:02:37 T:2684407808 M: 14032896   DEBUG: ------ Window Init (DialogSeekBar.xml) ------
23:02:37 T:2684407808 M: 14032896   DEBUG: Alloc resources: 0.06ms (0.03 ms skin load)
23:02:37 T:51638784 M: 13250560   DEBUG: CDVDPlayer::SetCaching - caching state 2
23:02:37 T:51638784 M: 13262848   DEBUG: demuxer seek to: 170692
23:02:37 T:53475840 M: 14626816   DEBUG: CoreAudioRenderer::Pause: Pausing Playback.
23:02:52 T:51638784 M: 15106048   DEBUG: SeekTime - seek ended up on time 181056
15 seconds to skip one time...

My configuration is AppleTV (latest XBMC svn build) through cable to router and then wirelessly (802.11g) to Mac OS X Snow Leopard with Samba share. Tried the same through 100Mb network - no big difference.

Whenever that happens, XBMC looks like is streaming the movie over a network instead of skipping to certain point. Maybe other protocol would be better to share movies with? I am running out of other ideas...

I had exactly the same issue, if I am honest I also had the issue of movies bombing out part way through. Both of these issues were resolved by stopping using Samba shares and moving to AFP shares.

The minute I went to AFP shares seek times were near instantaneous and the issue of movies quitting once 2GB had been streamed went away.

I realise this may not be the most helpful answer as setting up AFP shares is not trivial, however it can be done and it fixed the issue for me! Here is a link to the post where I described how I did it...

to set up is easy with the right tools.

1: Get a 1.0 recovery.dmg
2: install nito
3: install smart installer with nito

run smart installer

with these 3 the AFP is very easy and a 1 button deal

Is there a better share mode to be using from a windows machine?

SMB shares with 10.6 and > 2GB files is a known issue. Apple borked it. Maybe fixed in the 10.6.3 update. A google search will find the solution under 10.6.

TBH I have never had a good experience fast forward or rewinding, I thought it was just a 'thing'

Is it supposed to work then?

It works just fine on my system. I'm running a wireless-N via AFP.

To scared to try usually here and always have been. Ethernet connected throughout, makes no difference. If you do the ten minute jumps its usually ok but fast forwarding 2x 4x etc, forget it. Same with Plex.

Thanks guys for mentioning this, I didn't know the source and it was driving me nuts. I'm also having the issue that Horatio72 mentioned, of movies quitting after an hour or so, and skipping taking a long time. Using AFP fixes the issue, but it lacks the auto-mounting. Hopefully 10.6.3 will fix the smb issues; I don't wanna go back to leopard Undecided

Good news, Apple just released 10.6.3 and there is a mention of SMB:

Quote:File Services fixes provided for:

an issue that could prevent saving files from Microsoft Office 2008 to an SMB server volume.
issues copying, renaming or deleting files on an SMB server volume.
clear-text authentication enabling to an SMB file server.

I'm crossing fingers that this will fix the issue.

Auto mounting is a pain - I believe however it may simply be my lack of *nix ability in crafting the correct auto run script. Right now I have a shell script that I just SSH into the ATV and run to mount a few shares into the ATV movies directory, which has the effect of immediately making them appear to XBMC...

Not ideal but SO worth it to get around the SMB issues...

Same thing happened to me and using AFP also fixed it. I first noticed it while trying to do file transfer via file manager in XBMC. Every 1.2GB file would transfer find but anything much bigger would fail.

Unfortunately the 10.6.3 update hasn't fixed the issue. I have sent feedback to Apple and also submitted a bug report. I suggest that everyone send feedback to Apple:

http://bugreporter.apple.com

http://www.apple.com/feedback/

The more requests they get the more likely that the issue will get attention.

Use Nito and set it to mount.

Does anyone know if the newer 10.6.4 solves the SMB issues?
