Is Boxee infringing on the rights of XBMC?

Thumbs Up
I don't know if this is the right place to post this but have been told to ask the question here..

I have been involved in a rather heated debate with Boxee moderators and was wondering what the XBMC community thinks. Please read the posts at the following link:

bxflplayer is a closed source Boxee application. Perfectly legal to call other Applications from an open source GPL application. XBMC does it too when XBMC for Mac calls some closed source OSX tool. When XBMC for Windows calls an external player, same deal. What's the problem?

It's not the job of Boxee devs to port code back into XBMC. That's our job should we choose to take something and backport into XBMC. We do our thing, Boxee does theirs and sometimes our path crosses.

I really wish I hadn't read that. Hopefully this thread gets closed before it gets dragged into the direction of the boxee thread

I don't know if this work is done by Boxee already: http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/7983

Whoa, we all get to have that conversation again?

Edit: Sorry ignorant response.

That work has nothing to do with Boxee. It's the responsibility of XBMC devs to police XBMC source code. I believe Go Ahead and Monkey Audio have already been dealt with during our prep for Linux distro inclusion.

It's good to see this stuff is addressed. I just ment that Boxee forked most of this stuff and hopefully they address it as well.

Boxee concerns should be asked over on the Boxee forums.

You're right but I don't care about Boxee. But I read the topic Usminion pointed out and I would draw his attention to some GPL stuff related to XBMC.

Shouldn't the sources be provided then (or at least made available)? Check: http://xbmc.org/team-xbmc/2003/10/31/ple...l-license/

Bulkzooi, you are trolling. Consider this a warning.

Can you explain this because I don't understand why I'm trolling.

Because you ask a question that if you are as versed in GPL as you lead others to believe, you already know the answer. Thus you are asking the question in an attempt to elicit a response (i.e. trolling).

No it is a completely standalone application, it is not a derivative work, nor does it link to any gpl software. There is no reason for it to be released unless they chose to do so.

Contrary to what many people would like to believe, working with open source applications do not automatically taint the source of closed source applications.

Now many may argue that it may not be in the spirit of what open source is supposed to represent, however that is another debate altogether.

Boxee and XBMC (as well as other partners and sponsors) have an excellent working relation and it is trolling like this that can intentionally or not cause problems with existing or new relationships.
