Forgot to mention I'm on 32 bit Win 7, using the latest user generated DSplayer build from the first post in this thread and Aeon 6.5 skin.

I just tried playing the same AVI file from the computer and got different errors relating to audio. The video has mp3 audio. After seeing the audio error, I tried a few more videos from the computer, one AVI with AC-3 audio, and an MKV with AC-3 audio. The AVI with AC-3 audio gave the same audio errors as the first AVI. The MKV actually worked, DSplayer played it with audio. I then tried the same file over smb, and it didn't work.
These are the errors I saw for each of the AVI files:

As I said, s-300.mkv worked when played locally on the computer, but didn't work when played over smb using DSplayer (although it DOES work over smb with dvdplayer). The smb user has full permissions to all videos, and LAN transfer speeds are very fast (70-80MB/sec).
When played over smb with dsplayer, s-300.mkv displayed the same errors as in my previous post.

Ok so, does it work over smb with mpc-hc (be absolutely sure it's using mkvsource, and not haali). If so, then there's a bug in dsplayer. If it does not work, the splitter is the error cause. Try Haali.

I'm not sure how to set a specific splitter in MPC-HC. I set the DirectShow Video setting to EVR, and played the file from a windows share (mounted network drive in windows explorer), and it played fine.

Maybe this is a stupid question but why in the sticky at the top of this forum does it say latest dsplayer is 33619 2010/09/08/? Where would one get the latest release?

Because that was/is the last officially supported build. See the first post in this thread for a newer unsupported/use at your own risk build.

OK, thanks.I downloaded the newer build and when I right click a video file it doesn't show "play with" so that I can choose dsplayer. This is in file mode but in library mode I get that option. Is this how it should behave?

Stupid me, I was right clicking the folder not the video file.

hey guys...im brand new at this, just installed everything today (latest user build, ffdshow audio/video/dxva, haali, ac3)...everything went pretty smoothly, just now have to properly configure those programs and learn about pixel shaders...my main question is, i know with haali when you right click on the icon in the system tray it brings up the movie chapters in an mkv, is there anyways to somehow integrate that into xbmc? i tried searching but couldn't find much other than a few other people asking the same question, but a few years ago...anyways thanks for the great work guys, really an awesome program.

If your movie has chapters, just click next/previous will skip one chapter

No need to right click anything - if the chapters are included in the mkv or other file - using a remote in the same way as with a stand alone player, will skip chapters - ie:- press the chapter skip button on the remote.

Haha, whilst I remember (currently using normal XBMC because of intermittant crashes I was getting), is there a way to change audio/subtitle streams in DSPlayer, the DVDPlayer commands left in the UI dont work, and I couldnt see any mention to another route to do so?

Are you looking in your Users/Username/Roaming/XBMC folder or in the main XBMC folder?
What are you trying to do? If you've downloaded the DSPlayer build, DSPlayer will definately be included.
From my personal experience, as DSPlayer isn't quite finished yet, it can be prone to hanging, certainly far more often than XBMC base. 33619 is a bit old now, so moving to the new version is not a bad idea, even if its not technically an official build.
I also found that MPC-HC out the box does still play some files better than XBMC DSPlayer, which itself tends to be slightly better than XBMC/DVDPlayer, but as Tiben stated (not that I disagree!), DSPlayer is a more ambitious, complicated project than MPC-HC, not to mention MPC-HC has been in development as a standalone project for far longer.
Really, aside some crashes, and the fact I don't know yet how to switch audio/sub tracks with it, I actually like it more than DVDPlayer and they're the only thing holding me back from switching full time; as I said its not quite as fluent for playback as MPC-HC standalone is, but its definately better than DVDPlayer, and being able to use the android remote is a bit of a dealbreaker, as I have my system specifically tied up as a HTPC, the only time it even loads the explorer shell is when I exit XBMC and do it manually.
