HDMI and SPDIF for CDs
#1
Hi,

I have a 2 channel setup and currently get my film sound through the DAC in the TV passing audio over HDMI. I'm not 100% convinced by the quality of the DAC so I'm looking to replace it. I'd also like to rip my CDs and play them through XBMC, but I'll only do this if I can get bit-perfect out of the SPDIF interface. The HDMI has a 48kHz output, so when you're playing CDs, the data gets resampled.

I've also seen that paplayer can noiw do bit-perfect output so that seems to be OK.

Can you configure things so that xbmc plays a movie/CD it will:
- Output audio to both SPDIF and HDMI always
- Output to SPDIF at native bitrate, HDMI at 48kHz
- When playing a movie, downmix everything to stereo LPCM and put the resultant stream (at whatever frequency) out of both HDMI and SPDIF

I think you can do this with combinations of the xbmc settings and ALSA settings, but I'd like to be sure before I spend money on an external DAC. BTW, I'm not interested in upgrading to a surround sound system and letting the amp doing the decoding of DTS/DD, it's getting raw unsampled CD data I'm really interested in doing.
