Should I use a mapped network drive or actual network location on WHS???

May be a real noob question, but I was curious to know what method may be more efficient and responsive in terms of using a Windows Home Server. I map the shares as a network drive on my local PC's for easy access, and I noticed on XBMC, I can either add a SMB network location or add the local drive that I already mapped. They both point to the same location on the server, but was wondering if there was an advantage (ie: caching or speed) by using one over the other. My assumption is that the mapped network drive route would be a bit quicker, but this is an uneducated guess. Thoughts?

My personal preference has been smb + IP address instead of hostname + shared folder for speed and resilience.

I have been using the network location and it seems like it takes a while to refresh each time or when I try to add. I will try the IP + SMB and report back.
