running ver 10.0 live installed to hdd, not updated, full Xubuntu desktop.
after watching a tv show from the hard drive instead of it marking the episode as "watched"
and returning to the series list it exits xbmc altogether it drops me back to the desktop.

If I start xbmc and go to the "TVshows" library and pick a series (or movie) I will get a error message stating "File not found, remove from library?" but if I exit xbmc and start Dolphin file manager, open the external usb drive and *then* start xbmc and pick a movie it will run fine...
I'm not sure where to look for a resolution to this weird behaviour...
any ideas?

Sounds like you are mounting the USB drive on access. Set it up in your fstab so it is always mounted (unless you remove your USB drive frequently) and it will act like a normal disk.

As for your first question, I have no idea.
