mkv playback - don't start
#1
Hey all

How can i finde out why i can't playback a mkv movie. The movie don't start at all! it's a Avatar blueray rip in x-264 format.

I have xbmc live on a asus ION 330. Can play some blueray movies.

I had a problem where some MKVs would play a few seconds, then stop. Others were fine. I found that remuxing them cured the problem; there were evidently errors in the file when I used MakeMKV to create the files.

So its worth a try; download the free MKVToolNix utility from http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/ and try remuxing the file. There's a good step-by-step guide here: http://www.networkedmediatank.com/showth...?tid=24776 (but I found it pretty intuitive to use).

VLC uses software decoding, which is more robust than hardware decoding (aka it just powers through bad encodes, while GPU based decoding chokes on bad encodes).

For this reason "VLC did it!" is a terrible benchmark (as an ION board lacks enough CPU to even use XBMC software decoding).

Recommendations?

Remux with MKVmerge, or get a new copy from elsewhere that is encoded better.

For the record my straight Avatar Blu Ray rip (as in a straight rip from the Blu Ray 43 GBs big) works perfectly on my XBMC Live ION box. So the re-encode you got is probably terrible...

poofyhairguy is right; all of my MKVs worked perfectly in VLC and other media players, yet would not stream correctly. Remuxing fixed it.

If it works for you, it will be one of the easiest solutions you've run across.
