Hmm it shouldn't take that long. It only took me about 5 minutes on Windows. I must say though, if IO operations are taking that long then it's probably not going to run too fast for you on aTV.

I recommend you try again, perhaps try a different USB drive? I use a dedicated Sandisk Cruzer 4GB (no U3 on it) for my aTV operations. I got the Titanium edition for better I/O performance, and because plastic is a little too flimsy.

Are you definately imaging the right device?

Regards applications, no idea. I haven't installed plugins on the Linux yet and I can't check for a day or two because I'm getting a new tv in so I'm moving some stuff around at the moment.

I don't really use plugins but I think it's just a plugins folder underneath .xbmc?

~/.xbmc/plugins/music/
~/.xbmc/plugins/pictures/
~/.xbmc/plugins/programs/
~/.xbmc/plugins/video/

I think by "applications" you mean programs which would be under "programs" folder.

As for getting other remotes to work. Yes it can be done, but not as easily as in frontrow. Have a look at LIRC which will let you use any IR remote, provided you keymap it with XBMC.

Oh almost forgot to mention, if your XBMC crashed, Ubuntu may have done a core-dump which dumps the session to file. This can take up a good 100mb. You should SSH in and look for a core file. If it's there and your not debugging or persuing the crash you can delete it. Reboots are a bit slow, so I recommend either migrating to the internal HDD once the image is how you like it, or investing in a high speed flash drive

Thanks for the info.

regarding to programs folder, i mean where xbmc is installed to. Like in windows there is going one part to users/programdata/roaming and 1 to the actual program files. its this last 1 im searching on ubuntu.

I will migrate it to the internal HDD when im done tweaking Smile and i will take a look at LIRC. Im a first timer in linux.....

good luck with the new TV!!

Ah i see what you were asking. I installed from the SVN repo via apt so you will be able to upgrade when buildbot resumes again with very little hastle.

Thanks for the good luck

Nice Scott. 10 hours till next build sounds good! Any significant improvements with Crystal performance since 28256?

Didn't realise billy was firing up so soon, code merge was done quite quickly then

After short struggle with setting auto mount of samba shares, I got finally to the point where I could watch some movies.

720p plays OK in terms of decoding speed, but network is apparently slower than it is on ATV. I am getting buffering every minute, where it would only happen occasionally on ATV.

The only two 1080p movies I have caused XBMC to crash, leaving me at Ubuntu login screen.

Please help about network settings. On ATV I did some setting tweaks I found in one post. But I am not sure what to tweak on Linux, so that I could play 720p without constant buffering.

Maybe it's a Samba issue. I've had no network issues, network tweaks have been configured with kernel args (max c state)

If your having a lot of buffering perhaps the OS can't keep up, try a faster flash drive.

Post up MediaInfo of any difficult files, I've managed to play done raw BD rips so 1080p defo works

It's not seeing the Linux partition. Try and reimage that one again. Also verify that's the only USB drive connected. Is your internal drive attached? You need to verify that the USB is at /dev/sdb else if not you will need to modify com.apple.boot.plist

I presume you've only two devices connected ( USB and internal drive) because of your last drive being detected as sg1
