First off... This is an incredible program. Exactly what I was looking for and more. Both XBMC and the ability to control it all with my phone.

Unfortunately, I am having a spot of trouble syncing the android remote v0.7.1 and xbmc 9.11 on my computer. I have followed the step by step instructions provided on the website to a T, yet my phone simply won't connect.

I checked the "http://xbmc:8080/xbmcCmds/xbmcHttp?command=GetSystemInfo(120;121)" link you posted on similar problems and receive nothing but a "timed out" response.

Any help would be appreciated greatly.. though to error on the safe side, assume I know little about computers.

Have you replaced xbmc:8080 with <your_ip>:8080 ?

The default port number is 80 and not 8080! So check your network configuration in XBMC.
And look at your firewall configuration, also

Do you also get a timeout when connecting to the same URL via your desktop PC?
