Turn on SMB sharing on the Mac.

When I type in the xbox's IP address on the mac end using SMB it says it cannot locate the server...is there something I have to do on the xbox end at all

No you're running XBMC from the Xbox right, so you need to be entering the IP of the Mac, not t'other way round

server (computer with the files), client (computer you want to access those files)
mac == server, xbox == client.
mac == server, xbox == client.
