XBMC & Windows Live Essentials Beta
#1
Hi guys,

I just downloaded and installed the new Windows live essentials beta to give the new sync and photo apps a whirl. I noticed however that after installation, my xbox in my bedroom could no longer connect to my win7 box (where i installed WLEB). I figured that live essentials was the culprit and sure enough, after I uninstalled, i could access my htpc again from my xbox in my bedroom.

has anyone else had a similar experience? Can anyone independently confirm that the new live essentials is the cause? any workarounds that may pop into mind?

Identical problem - the Live Essentials Beta killed my SMB shares. Apparently this problem has been around for some time - google "windows live sign-in assistant xbmc."

Apparently this "sign-in assistant" screws with SMB sharing. On the old builds of Windows live there was actually a program called "windows live sign-in assistant" which you could uninstall under "Add & Remove Programs," and that would fix the XBMC problem. However, with this latest Windows Live beta I don't see a specific program called "windows live sign-in assistant." Hence, I uninstalled the whole Windows Live Beta package, and my SMB shares started working again. Come on Microsoft!

Before the beta, I removed the Windows Live Sign In Assistant and my WD Live HD worked properly, but the problems started again with the beta - even though there was no separate Sign In Assistant in the Control Panel. Anyhow, after more digging I found this: http://www.technixupdate.com/stop-delete...dsvcm-exe/. If you go to the Task Manager and show processes from all users, you'll see the two services for the Sign In assistant running again. Disable them in Services and you should be good to go (not confirmed on all platforms yet).

Good luck!

hey jeff, nice work finding that article. unfortunately, stopping those services did not enable my xbox to connect to my htpc via smb. I am uninstalling the live essentials beta and will not even bother with it, since xbmc is way more important to me than the new beta sync and photo gallery.

thanks for your help

Installing Games for Windows Software V3.4 via Windows Update also installed Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant and killed SMB access.

Installing Windows Live Essentials 2011 also blocks SMB Access.

Send microsoft feedback regarding them sabotaging SMB access with Windows Live ID

Better yet, quit playing with windows and switch to Ubuntu. This is the type of thing that made me switch. You simply copy your videos , documents and music to the new videos documents and music.
Use mythicalLibrarian to make a library out of your MythTV files. Leave the recording to MythTV and use XBMC as your library.
