[APPLETV] playback issus with CrystalHD driver/lib complied from source

Scott,

I have built r137 and am using without any issues with xbmc r31648 on ATV(OSX) with 720p. I have an old layout card. I realise that may be anecdotal given I may be lucky and have good DRAM, but I thought some positive feedback from an older card owner might make you feel good!

However, occasionally with 1080p I get the video not wanting to start up (xbmc seems to get stuck 'working' for a long while) then when it finally starts, I get the worst shuttering ever - maybe it shows one frame every couple of seconds. I have managed to make it do the problem and have posted some info below:

sudo dmesg output:
http://pastebin.com/upMpeTCB

xbmc.log:
http://pastebin.com/kPvv8Amn

MediaInfo:
http://pastebin.com/va9UPNdF

Output of top:
http://pastebin.com/dfjvbwcL
(xbmc is never more than 50-55%, sometimes as low as 25% - so not maxed out when playing file)

The video in question is a 1080p rip of Green Zone - sorry about the size of the log, but didn't want to restart xbmc and then not be able to reproduce the problem. If it happens again with other material I'll let you know.

As per other thread where me and Paul were asking about an approriate place to post these kinds of issues, I have copied my original post from CrystalBuntu thread to here and destroyed the original.

Another 1080p encoded at [email protected] with CABAC / 5 Ref Frames.

Those might never play right, bluray spec is 4 Ref frames.

However in xbmc.log, I don't see DVDPlayerVideo complaining but this

DEBUG: CoreAudioRenderer:Tongueause: Pausing Playback.
DEBUG: CCoreAudioRenderer::OnRender: Buffer underrun.
DEBUG: CoreAudioRenderer::Resume: Resuming Playback.
DEBUG: CDVDPlayerAudio:: Discontinuity - was:122886549.956000, should be:122432000.000000, error:-454549.956000

Do you have video sync type set to video ?

I had it set to audio - but tried both video (resample audio and drop/dupe) sync settings with no appreciable difference. This is admittedly a heavy 1080p (file weighs in about 14 GB) but my other rips that weigh in about 7-8 GB that played fine before are also struggling in the same manner.

Anyway, I tried old firmware with r137 kext/lib, but this caused the CrystalHD button in video settings to disappear. Finally rolled back everything to old kext/lib/driver. Restarted ATV, fired up xbmc and tried to play a selection of 1080p stuff, including the offending Green Zone Blu Ray rip. It all plays fine with the pre-compiled stable release from the googlecode page (1.0.3 - I believe).

Do you think that it's a old style card/new firmware thing? I'm willing to guinea pig with my system if it will be of use?

Could be new vs old firmware. You can try inter-changing the new for old firmware. This is ok regarding internal crystalhd ABI.

I tried it once and lost the CrystalHD option in settings, but then maybe I needed to reboot rather than unload/reload kext? When I get back later I'll have a second try - with a reboot - and report back...

I got very similar display messages; I'm running v137 driver/firmware on SVN 31642

-bash-2.05b$ sw_vers
ProductName: Apple TV OS
ProductVersion: 10.4.7
BuildVersion: 8N5880

I've got one of the old bcm70012 - purchased june 09 - it could be dodgy as well for all i know

I attempted playback of a home movie from a Canon SX20IS

first playback of the .MOV file was perfect (never better); At end-of-movie, it looped and started over, and then started to shudder / skip fast.

dmesg
http://pastebin.com/w5zAimtb

mediainfo
http://pastebin.com/BEVhv8Fn

xbmc.log

Looks like audio issues.

Hi, just to follow up:

New Kext/Lib with old firmware (with my old layout card) does not show up as far as I can see in XBMC options. If I use old everything then I get a toggle button for CHD in video preferences. Same if I use new everything.

If I mix old and new, then this option disappears:

sudo dmesg
http://pastebin.com/kpxEhmMG

xbmc.log
http://pastebin.com/fXCrizXq

Hope this helps,

Jim
