seems to work with on disk mp3s just fine, I'm guessing due to the way upnp presents the library this isn't available until the file starts to stream

would be nice if xbmc made use of the image once the file is streaming tho'

Loading of that is the servers job, not the upnp player. They should extract the thumb and present it as the file thumb over upnp.

absolutely, and I'll raise a feature/bug request with the upnp server (mediatomb), it would still be nice if xbmc, grabbed and used the data as it went by
