#1
Hi

I've installed ubuntu 9.10 minimal and followed the tutorial found here: http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=XBMCbuntu

I can start xbmc without problems, but there is no sound at all.
In alsamixer is everything maxed out and unmuted.
my soundcard is an onboad intel ich5.
I also tried it with a pci soundcard and i have the same problem.

please help me, i've been searching more than a week to fix the problem.

create a /etc/asound.conf with this

pcm.!default {
type plug
slave {
pcm "hdmi"
}
}

you will aslo need to set xbmc for the correct settings according to your setup

This is not well documented in wiki but it is all over google just need to do leg work there http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=xbmc+no...=firefox-a

I searched already on google but didn't find a solution.
I don't need sound over hdmi, just the normal 3,5" jack

you are mixing something up, templar needs to get sound out of the analog stereo jack

as long as we don't get some aplay -l or aplay -L output we can't do shit about it, his xbmc audio settings seem to be right for what he's trying to accomplish

I don't know how up to date you are?? The last kernel update broke my sound. I guess it's been a couple of days ago now. I haven't taken the time to investigate it yet but my sound does use the Intel ICH kernel driver. I back on the 2.6.32-23 kernel for now.

hmm, about 2 months or more ago my sound worked perfect
i reinstalled it now and it won't work now...

how did you fix that kernel driver ?

From the grub boot menu selected the kernel that was working before the update. If you've installed all the updates I would think that there would be a few different kernels to choose from.

EDIT: fixed my problem. My user wasn't part of the audio group, didn't seem to matter with the earlier kernel.

You can try this - sudo adduser <username> audio
