During playback (quite often now) XBMC hangs, and in fact the entire system hangs and needs to be rebooted. It usually happens during movie playback and not during TV episode playback. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated

Updated to the latest Nightly build and problem remains...

CrystalHD is sensitive to seeking around. From the log, it looks like you are doing lots of forward and backward seeks. Start a video play back, let it play. Does it still hang ? kextstat shows 3.6.0 version ? dmesg output ?

Did as directed. Started a file, and let it play. It Hung the system and i had to reboot.
