are you absolutely sure you have fglrx >=2:8.911 as deb pkg installed?
I bet you don't - and thats why xbmc refuses to install.
The instructions are really easy to follow.

check your fglrx version with
Code:
dpkg -l | grep fglrx
I'll check tonight, but I installed the latest ATI drivers (11.12) as per your instructions.

But I'm secretly thinking about buying an Nvidia card. The Linux support for the Radeon cards is a bit too experimental for my taste. On the other hand: if I can get this to work, it's ok with me.

still using putty (omit DISPLAY=:0 if you do it local).

Code:
sudo DISPLAY=:0 aticonfig --set-pcs-val=MCIL,DigitalHDTVDefaultUnderscan,0
sudo DISPLAY=:0 aticonfig --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf --tls=1

I have this problem with the black borders all round, I tried running the first command but it says:

No layout section was found in the file: /etc/x11/xorg.conf
Please run aticonfig --intstall first or modify your configuration file manually and run aticonfig again.
amdconfig parsing command-line failed.

Not sure how to fix it ?

Thanks.
