Yeah not really that impressive. I'm sure we will see some nice homebrew media players built under iOS for Apple TV - but if it can only push 720p - what's the point really?

meh...

Reported by a new atv2 owner, playback of 1080p h.264 [email protected], cabac with 4 ref frames. Unverified as yet but source is trustworthy.

Hrm that is interesting - all the media attention was around 720p - but maybe that's just Apple's limit on their movie rentals to cap download sizes? If it's true, then we could see some nice iOS homebrew media apps soon (e.g. non-XMBC ones!).

It is been confirmed that it can playback some 1080P content but it will still output them in 720P though ...

How unlikely is XBMC on this looking?

Should I stop dreaming now?

If someone gets stock Linux running on it, with say ffmpeg / OpenGL es acceleration working, why wouldn't it work as a recompile? The only thing I can think of that there wont be a way to access the hardware codec support in the chipset- or that it's limited to Apple standards, which are few compared to stock XBMC.

At half the price of a Boxee Box, it's a pretty good deal, on par with what the original Xbox delivered to the starving masses at the time.

I wouldn't be suprised if it was half the speed as the boxee box as well since boxee box has 1.2GHZ ATOM and 1GB RAM ...

Time will tell, if a dev or skilled individual is willing to hack around with it I'd be willing to chip in for the cost of a test unit.

If there are any takers lemme know, this would be the perfect fit for my HTPC needs

When are you guys going to stop comparing clocks of different processors ? I thought the Intel P4 days showed that this is oh so wrong.

Davilla, I wasn't comparing just based on cpu clock alone but based on some benchmarks ...

Based on the rumored benchmarks from Davilla, it'll do 1080p. What more do you want? 2160p?

Given that 480i lasted us 60 years, if 1080p does it for 1/2 that I'd be happy for a $99 device that'll do it...

the CE4100 devices (boxee box, google TV/logitech) won't have bitrate limits, the appleTV will. this thing might be able to actually decode 1080p material and natively send it to the TV, but I guess that there would be severe limitations to this. might be a similar problem why the boxee guys dropped the tegra2 and went for intel instead.
