Umm, well why don't you try looking two posts up?

Subterfuge,

I've attempted to make it as easy as possible in the wiki article. The thing is that a little knowledge of linux is required. I didn't really explain how to use vi (editor), or other commands.

Glad the bios update went smoothly for you. I always get nervous during that part.

Next step is to 'burn' the xbmc ISO to a thumbdrive. You can follow my way, but with the latest beta version of dharma from xbmcfreak, I have had pretty good luck using unetbootin.

Basically, grab your thumb drive, format it in Windows, use unetbootin and point it to the xbmcfreak ISO you downloaded. Boot it and continue from step 5 in the wiki article. Another note...if you use unetbootin with the xbmcfreak beta iso, I find that I don't have to do “Load CD-ROM driver from removable media?” part.

Other than that, it's pretty straight-forward now. The first beta of the xbmcfreak dharma was a little goofy, but the beta2 should be good to go.

Your tutorial was very helpful. I got everything working perfect except the remote.. I just get the red LED fully lit when i push any buttons on the remote and nothing happens. Any advice? I am using a Rosewill RR-127.

A little tip for the remote... SSH into the box and type "irw" at the command line. Press a button on the remote and see if anything happens. You should get the remote command. If you do, proceed onto the next step. If you don't, it means that lirc didn't find the remote and there's bigger problems....meaning that you may have to reconfigure lirc. If this is the case, let us know and we can help.

OK, so if you get some sort of response with IRW, then you know linux sees the remote just fine. You are probably just missing the lircmap.xml file. I'm using the MCE remote, so I don't know what your remote codes could be. Basically, this lircmap.xml file tells xbmc that your "Play" button maps to xbmc's "Play" button. A "red" button maps to xbmc's "delete file" function...or you can have it do something else. I'm sure you get the picture.

I'm going to guess that the lircmap file is either wrong or not for your remote. I'd also recommend searching for your remote name and xbmc. There might be another person that got it working and has the lircmap file done for you.

Good Luck!

On second thought... I saw this post here...

http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=76187

which leads me to believe that the lirc might have to be updated and/or re-installed. Either case, it looks like this remote might take a little messing around with in order for it to work.

I've been in lirc/remote hell a few years ago with a Hauppauge one. If it was me, I would see if I could exchange the remote for a Windows MCE one, or get a MCE one. There's a lot out there, but I can tell you that the one in the wiki article works out of the box.

I don't want to say that your remote won't work...it may work...but you probably just have to get lirc to work with it first, which may be a headache.

Here's another post that might help you out.

Good Luck!!

Exactly the problem.. There is no response when i run "irw" and push buttons. The LED just lights up and stays lit.

I have updated LIRC through cvs and followed several guides and this is always the same result.

It sounds to me as if it's an LIRC problem, as you probably already know... It also sounds like you did a lot of research and did what I would suggest...so I'm out of guesses.

Another suggestion is to put a reply on another thread elsewhere and see what happens. I don't have much faith in ubuntuforums because I don't get a lot of my questions answered, but you might have better luck at it.
