Hi all,
I am building my HTPC for XBMC.

Any suggestion for an audio card with COAX output compatible with LINUX?
(The COAX output will be connected to an external AV Receiver, so must be able to transmit DTS and DD signals)

Not too expensive, thou Wink !!

Have seen these two but I don't know if they work with LINUX:
1. ASUS XONAR DG

2. SOUNDBLASTER X-Fi XtremeGamer Xtreme Audio

thanks in advance

I don't like either of those cards for Linux. By far my favorite Linux compatible card with a digital COAX output is this card:

I have two, they are plug and play in Linux.

Mini/Micro ITX Frontend (with SSD) + Mediaserver/NAS + Logitech Harmony + LCD/LED/Plasma TV + Nice AV Receiver + XBMC + USENET + sabnzbd + sickbeard +couchpotato

Hi,
thanks for your reply, but this card is not available anymore in Italy...
I have found the NILUX AUDIO8CHCMI-8768 that uses the same chipset (CMI8768).

Does it send the multichannel sound to the coax output (like DTS and DD)? Or it sends only 2.0? I'm asking it because I have read many complaints about this and didn't know if they were real or not.

And, the ASUS XONAR DG uses the CMI8786 chipset. Why you don't suggest it?
Doesn't it work under Linux very well?

EDIT: also a card with an OPTICAL output (instead of the COAX) could do the job!

Any other suggestion?

thanks again

Any card or chipset I recommend in this area support both DTS and DD passthrough in XBMC Live as I use that myself (and I own these cards).

I suggest against a ASUS XONAR DG only because its a little overpriced where I am at, and honestly any CMI8768 card will do.

In fact, if Toslink optical out is good enough like you state (and not just COAX) than the VIA VT1723 cards provide the best plug and play value. You can't go wrong with either chipset, I use them both.

Hi thanks for your reply.

I found a card with VT1723 chipset. Here it's around 20 Euros.
But the model I found looks very cheap.

On the other hand, here the XONAR DG is around 33 Euros, so not a big difference. I don't want to seem to be pushing for the ASUS, but it seems to be more professionally built. Oo

BUT, the XONAR DG mounts the CMI 8786 chipset, and not the CMI 8768. Will this chipset work under Linux?

thanks again
