AppleTV Broadcom BCM70015 picture scaling issue?
#1
Hi,
This is my first post. I have an AppleTV (3.02) with Broadcom BCM70015 installed together with XBMC r33778 (Dharma Beta 2) and CrystalHD r156 (20100826). I would like to thank the people here for making it possible for nobs like me to be able to install the above with ease. Everything seems to work find including my 720p movies which I can now play smoothly except for this one big issue for me.

I have observed a serious issue which affected the picture quality of 720p movies with my CrystalHD which I did not find reported elsewhere in the forum. I do not know how to describe the issue so I will attach pictures instead.

Good Picture (720p movie without CrystalHD)

Bad Picture (720p movie with CrystalHD)
Notice the jagged edged on the letters. On movies, they appear like tiny vertical band swimming. Could this be some sort of scaling issue?

I also notice that on SD movies, the picture quality is not affected (ie they are all good) with and without CrystalHD.

I am suprised no one else has reported this issue. I am afraid it may be due to my setup. Can someone advise if there's anyway to fix this issue?

Thanks.

Never seen this before, xbmc.log when playing a 720p movie with CrystalHD.

I've also noticed this. Thought it may have related to overscan adjustment in xbmc but haven't had the time to play around with it.

When I get home this evening I'll play a video and take a screen shot or two and upload my logs.

Cheers,

Jason.

Here is the xbmc.log taken after running a 720p movie for about 5 minutes

(This is the first time I am using pastebin. Hope it turns out alright.)

Thanks, nothing wrong in the log that I see.

What is 'new 3.8.0 tag' and would I be able to use that to repeat my test.

Give me a bit to build the download binaries for OSX.

EDIT: see http://code.google.com/p/crystalhd-for-o...loads/list

Thanks. I have downloaded the binaries but I do not know what to do with them. If someone can point me to the right direction, I could give it a go.

Thanks for the fix.
The only way I know how to update xbmc on the Apple TV is via the Launcher which currently has r33778. I guess I have to wait until the new release is available on the Launcher before I can test to see if it fixes the problem.

Thanks again for all the good work.

I have found a scene from Avatar that can demonstrate this problem if anyone is interested.

See http://www.imageurlhost.com/images/28cfw...r_720p.jpg

In this scene, as the spaceship moves, the stars in the background should not twinkle. In my case, the stars twinkle. Many elements (consisting of straight lines) of the spaceship appear to 'oscillate' as well.

Bear in mind, only the 720p version has this problem with the CrystalHD. The SD version is ok. I am not sure if the 1080p version has this problem.

Yeah that's pretty much the effect when you throw away half the pixels on the luma plane.
