I have been running XBMC for a while now but are getting annoyed by the need of the TV remote just to turn it on and choose input source.
At the moment I am also looking into buying a new TV for the living room and wonder if there is any one here with feedback on which brands are easy/possible to control by a wired interface (rs232/ethernet/whatever).
From what I have read Samsung has a somewhat strange connector and also are not possible to turn on by its "debug" port.
LG seems better but I havent found any recent posts on internet about it working.
What I mean with controllable are:
Turn ON and OFF
Switch channel and input source
Volume up/down
Thanks
David

Thanks for the idea, Harmony is a good product, but using it assumes that all commands to controll the TV orginates by me pressing a button on the remote.
It will never be able to turn off tv when something turn of the box running XBMC or when it goes into screensaver mode. |

Not sure what you mean here - how else do you expect to control the tv/xbmc without pressing a button? I have a Harmony that operates xbmc, my receiver and tv all at the same time. Why on earth would you want a wired controller? |

LG Tv's work fine from RS232. It's quite a cool setup too - though finding a HTPC with a serial port is tough, and USB to serial adapters can be spotty.

Sure I will press some button on a remote for many operations and yes those could go from a Harmony (but I prefere an iPhone app so that me and my wife dont have to fight over the remote as both have one). But when the box automaticly goes down in power saving state I think it should bring down the TV as well and for that Harmony will never be suitable. |
